Manchester United Pip Rostov 1-0 But Lose Pogba

Manchester United reached the Europa League quarter-finals after beating Rostov 1-0 at Old Trafford on Thursday.

The goal, a simple tap-in by Juan Mata was enough to assure qualification after the Red Devils drew 1-1 in the first leg.

Interviewed after the game, Mata said “we played some great football, created some nice chances but couldn’t finish, but we’re happy today.

‘They are a team who push until the end of and they have a difficult system to play against.”

Jose Mourinho’s side dominated from the outset, Henrikh Mkhitaryan shooting wide when one-on-one and Zlatan Ibrahimovic twice hitting the post before the break.

Rostov had to score though as the scoreline favoured Manchester Unted who would still have qualified on the away goal rule. Things went bad for the home team when Paul Pogba had to go after injured. The space left by the midfielder was exploited by Rostov and only the heroics of Sergio Romero kept the scoreline 0-0.

The goal came 20 minutes from time after good counter-attacking football that included Ibrahimovic, Herrera and Mata.

The Red Devils are joined in the quarter-finals by Lyon, Celta Vigo, Genk, Besiktas, Ajax, Schalke and Anderlecht.

The quarter-final draws would hold on Friday at 1pm (WAT).
