Billionaire Margarita Louis-Dreyfus, pregnant with twin girls at age 53

Swiss billionaire Margarita Louis-Dreyfus has announced she is pregnant with her second set of twins.

The 53-year-old chairwoman of French conglomerate Louis Dreyfus Commodities and widow of French businessman Robert Louis-Dreyfus is expecting twin girls in early April. Margarita and Robert, who married in 1992 had three sons, Eric and twins Kyril and Maurice, before he died of leukemia in 2009.
The expectant mother is currently dating Swiss banker Philipp Hildebrand, 52, the vice chairman of US investment manager BlackRock, however she has not confirmed or not he is the father of her unborn children.

In a statement made via her company, Margarita confirmed that she plans on continuing her duties as non-executive chairwoman until the birth, before taking a brief maternity leave and returning to work full time in late April.
The Russian-born businesswoman gained Swiss nationality through her first marriage before she met Robert in 1988 on a flight to London from Zurich.
Margarita, who was working as a circuit-board-equipment seller when they wed, became a full time wife and mother. However, before his death, Robert set up a family trust called Akira BV to hold his majority stake in the privately held, Amsterdam-based company, naming Margarita the family trustee.

$2.1bn arms deal scandal: We didn’t know compensations were from arms fund says Nduka Obaigbena

Chairman of ThisDay newspapers and president of Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) Nduka Obaigbena has written to EFCC on allegations he received part of the controversial arms deal money. In a letter yesterday, Obaigbena said his company and NPAN didn’t know that the N670million compensation they got from the office of the National Security Adviser were from arms purchase fund. Obaigbena disclosed this in his reaction to EFCC on the payments his company and the 12 other newspapers received from the NSA in 2015. In a letter sent to EFCC, Obaigbena said;

“When the ONSA (Office of the National Security Adviser) said that they had approval to pay us, but would rather not set a precedent by paying THISDAY directly, we nominated a member company of the THISDAY Newspapers Group, called General Hydrocarbons Ltd., to receive the payments on behalf of the group of companies, given that the assets of General Hydrocarbons Ltd – mainly generators – were also destroyed in the bombings;

“We did ask our insurance consortium to pay compensation but they said we were not covered for war and or terrorism risk. Until that time, we never knew we needed war or terrorism insurance in Nigeria as the government had not officially declared war. With the power of hindsight, we now know better.

“We simply used the compensation funds to defray some 30 per cent of the N1.7 billion we already paid to 3rd party printers for services in lieu of the Abuja press, while we went to our banks for refinancing printing presses, computer-to-plate and other facilities.”

“We never participated in any arms purchase in any shape or form and only demanded compensation for a horrendous terrorist act against us. In the same way, the United Nations and others who may have received some compensation could not have known the line budget items for the funds being used for the reconstruction of the UN Abuja buildings. Even the Nigerian Guild of Editors, which may have received donations for their secretariat from the ONSA, could not have known which subhead it was paid from. We simply cannot know or be expected to speculate which line item the spending was made from by the ONSA. There is simply no nexus between payments made for compensation, to us victims of terrorism as well as to newspapers in compensation for an unprovoked attack on free speech, and any arms purchase budget’

We do not deserve further trauma because some official(s), outside of our control, may or may not have followed due process. All victims of terrorist attack deserve a fair and just compensation. The fact that we have received some remedy should be reason to accelerate compensation for all victims of Boko Haram attacks across Nigeria however big or small,” he said.

CBN orders Nigerian banks to stop the charging of commission of turnover (COT) in January 1st

Effective from last week Friday, January 1, 2016, Nigerian banks are expected to charge nothing as Commission on Turnover (CoT) according to the gradual phase out plan of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The CBN in April 2013 had revised the guidelines on bank charges, introducing the gradual phasing out of commission on turnover.

The revised guideline had introduced a gradual reduction of CoT from N5 per mile (per N1000) in early 2013 to N3 per mille or N1000, N2 per N1000 in 2014 and is to be N1 per N1000 in 2015 and finally phased out effective January 1, 2016.

Although some banks had stopped charging CoT, others still charge and in some cases above the stipulated N1 per mille which it was last year. Also for some banks, the amount charged as CoT depends on the customers’ relationship and ability to haggle with the bank.

image

Last year, the apex bank had ordered deposit money banks to refund illegal fees charged customers over a period of one year, giving them 30 days to refund the excess charges or face severe penalties. Specifically, the central bank said some banks had been overcharging customers on the Commission on Turnover while some lenders had also imposed illegal maintenance fees on the CoT-free accounts.
