Nigerian scientist, Prof. Umezuruike Opara wins the 2016 African Union Kwame Nkrumah prize for Earth Science – Proudly Nigerian

Nigerian scientist, Professor Umezuruike Opara emerged the winner of the African Union Kwame Nkrumah Continental Scientific Award in the field of Earth Science. Opara was conferred with the $100,000 award at the opening of the 26th Sessions of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government held at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The ceremony was moderated by the AU Commissioner for Human Resources, Science and Technology, Martial De Paul Ikounga. According to the commissioner, the Kwameh Nkrumah Continental Scientific Awards given at three levels: national, regional and continental was to honour African men and women in science who distinguished themselves by their contributions to African development through their work in the field of research and training. Around the world -Widow stabbed her ex-father-in-law to death and then posted a selfie with his body on social media

Friends of Amanda Taylor were shocked to the core when they read her graphic Instagram post in April 2015. They knew Amanda, 24, had been going through a tough time since the tragic death of her estranged husband Rex, but her chilling words were truly disturbing.

“Everything I did was for the right reasons. I stabbed my father-in-law to death because he destroyed my husband…” she wrote. “I wasn’t the perfect wife but this was one last good thing I could do.”

It seemed unbelievable that someone would confess to a brutal murder on social media, especially as Amanda was a mum to two young children. But the widow followed it up with a post on her Facebook page saying, “I proudly did this for Rex.”

Violence fanatics

When police discovered Amanda’s father-in-law Charles Taylor, 59, stabbed to death, a massive manhunt began. Amanda was on the run and threatening to end her life to be with Rex. Through social media, Amanda was about to show the world just how dark she really was.

Amanda, from Virginia, met Rex at school. She dropped out when she fell pregnant, the couple married and had a son, followed by a daughter. But their relationship was far from conventional. Both had a fascination with violence and wrote to serial killers behind bars.

Chris Brown’s baby mama accuses him of gaving their child asthma with his weed

Chris Brown’s baby mama Nia Guzman  is taking him to court on the claims that he is making their child sick. She told the judge that one year old Royalty has developed asthma, and it’s all because Chris has exposed her to an extreme amount of secondhand smoke, adding that he is a weed and tobacco enthusiast, according to a report by TMZ…

Nia says that every time Royalty comes back from a visit with Chris, she usually reeks of smoke. Nia said she’s worried Chris is abusing drugs and has relapsed, mostly with sizzurp.

Nia wants Chris’ visitation to be restricted, asking the judge to force him to hire a full-time nanny or pull back on his right to be around the child.

She also wants the judge to force Chris to take random drug tests, prohibit him from using drugs or consuming alcohol around Royalty, and stop him from smoking around their daughter.

In addition she wants her child support to be increased from $2500 to $16000.

Lagos state vows to clamp down on substandard vessels after Ibeshe boat mishap

Following the unfortunate boat incident that occurred on Saturday, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has summoned an emergency meeting with all commercial boat operators in the state on Tuesday, February 2, just as it vowed to clamp down on boat operators who continue to contravene the rules and regulations guiding their operations.
In a statement signed by the Managing Director of LASWA, Mrs. Abisola Kamson, the meeting which will focus on the compliance of safety standards of vessels operating on the state waterways will hold at the LASWA office in Falomo Ikoyi by 9:30am.
“Despite efforts by the State Government to enforce the safety standards on the waterways, some boat operators still flout the rules and regulations thereby putting the lives of innocent citizens at risk”.

“The Lagos State Government will not tolerate the operation of substandard vessels on the waterways. Any individual or corporate entity found to be operating vessels not deemed water worthy will be prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the law,” she said.

Kamson who confirmed the boat mishap at Ibeshe, Ikorodu said the incident occurred at approximately 10:20am on a boat, Amen Limited, of Aki Marine Company belonging to one Mr. Akeem Balogun, which was travelling from Ijede to Badore East.

She said although all passengers on the boat were wearing their life jackets, the covered design of the boat made rescue efforts challenging.

Kamson said that survivors rescued were immediately taken to the Ijede General Hospital for treatment, while investigations are ongoing in collaboration with the Marine Police.

The LASWA boss who was at the scene of the incident reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to ensuring all operators plying the Lagos waterways comply with safety standards to prevent future loss of life and property.
