We must take care of Messi – Argentina president

The 29-year-old announced his decision to quit international football following the Copa America final defeat to Chile and the country’s leader wants him to ignore his critics

Argentina president Mauricio Macri revealed his discussion with Lionel Messi as he tried to convince the star to remain with the national team.

The 29-year-old stunningly announced he was set to retire from internationals after his side’s penalty shoot-out loss to Chile in the Copa America Centenario final on Sunday.

Fans and players have urged Messi, Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer, to reconsider.

Marci has tried to do the same and said the Barcelona star was huge for the country.

“I spoke with him to congratulate him and tell him he had done a great championship,” Macri told reporters.

He added: “I don’t understand. The truth is that it’s a joy, a gift from God, to have the best player in the world in a country like ours.

Messi is the biggest thing we have in Argentina, so you have to take care of him.”

Macri spoke to Messi on Monday, a day after Gerardo Martino’s men went down to Chile 4-2 on penalties.

He also wanted the miraculous attacker to ignore critics, saying: “I told him not to pay attention to all the comments being made because, in truth, we are very happy.”

Messi scored five goals at the Copa, but he put his penalty in the shoot-out over the bar as Argentina’s 23-year trophy drought continued.

He is yet to speak publicly since announcing his decision.

Yemi Alade rates Beyonce and Her Equal

Sexy singer, Yemi Alade got tongues waggling over the weekend, when she stepped out with a designer dress worth 2.5 million naira.

As if that was not enough, the singer who is still making buzz in the media has given more to talk about her.

She now ranks herself equal with international acts like Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, among others.

Well, it’s good to appreciate one’s craft, and no doubt Nigerian music has gone far more than the shores of our country alone.

Isn’t such comparison a bit unrealistic? As the singer claims the only differences she can spot is ‘opportunity’ which put these international acts on an advantage.

In her words: “I was fortunate to watch Beyonce, Alicia keys, usher, Jennifer Hudson hit the stage, all in one night. It was magical. I also realized that apart from the talent, the major difference between us and them is opportunity.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan wants ‘full seat’ at Brexit talks

London Mayor Sadiq Khan rejected calls for London to secede from the rest of Britain after a national referendum in favour of leaving the EU but said he wanted a “full seat” at any Brexit negotiations.
Khan also demanded more autonomy from central government, including on public spending, in order to “protect” the British capital’s economy.

While the campaign to leave the European Union won Thursday’s referendum nationwide with 52 percent, Londoners voted 60 percent in favour of Britain staying in the EU along with Scotland, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar.

London should have “a full seat at the negotiating table”, Khan said at a business conference, according to a copy of his speech posted on the mayor’s website.

“Remaining in the single market needs to be priority one, two and three of our negotiation with the EU.

“As much as I might like the idea of a London city state, I’m not seriously talking about independence today. I am not planning to install border points on the M25,” Khan told the conference in London.

“But on behalf of all Londoners, I am demanding more autonomy for the capital — right now,” he said, adding: “We can’t hang around for the outcome of the negotiations before we give Londoners more control”.

Following the shock referendum result, an online petition urging Khan to declare independence and apply for London to join the European Union independently received 175,000 signatures.

“Londoners — who voted for a different path than the rest of England — need more self-determination. We need to control our own destiny,” Khan said.

Gunmen kill Lagos police sergeant, rob boat passengers

A police sergeant, Yusuf Hadi, has been ambushed and shot dead by suspected militants while in a boat on Ishuti River in the Egan area of Igando, Lagos State.

Our correspondent learnt that the gunmen, who were in another boat, attacked Hadi, who was attached to the Police Mobile Force 43, two female passengers, and the boat operator around the Agbara Bridge, towards Totowu community in Ogun State.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident occurred at about 3pm on Monday, and was reported at the Igando Police Division.

Some policemen at the Igando division were said to have rushed the sergeant to a private hospital but he did not survive the attack.

It was learnt that the militants, believed to be pipeline vandals, also dispossessed the ladies of their phones and money, before ordering Hadi to lie flat in the boat.

The sergeant, who was in uniform as of the time of the attack, was said to have begged his assailants to spare his life.

However, the vandals said he was an enemy and fired him first in the leg.

Thereafter, they reportedly pumped bullets into his body.

It was gathered that the boat operator and female passengers ferried Hadi to Ishuti, Egan, where some policemen from the Igando division rushed him to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

When reporter got to the Ishuti River on Tuesday, a witness, who gave his name only as Otunba, said the militants were three.

He said, “The three gunmen came in a fibre boat around 3pm. They waylaid the policeman’s boat around the Agbara Bridge area. They ordered the policeman to enter their boat and he did. He begged them to spare his life. But they said he was an enemy and ordered him to lie down in the boat. They first shot at his leg.

“Then they robbed the female passengers and the boat operator, collecting money, phones and jewellery. They returned to the policeman and they rained bullets on him. The militants instructed the boat operator not to drive away until the sergeant was dead.

“It was around 3.30pm that the boat got to Egan. Policemen from Igando division were here to receive the sergeant. His commander also came to check him, but he had died. If there had been a helicopter patrol around the bridge, the militants could have been spotted and arrested.”

The chairman of the boat operators, Ishuti River Unit, Alhaji Nurudeen Olorunfemi, urged the government to have military surveillance around the Agbara Bridge, which he said was notorious for militants’ attacks.

He said, “The Ishuti River, flows to Totowu, Itele and Agbara areas of Ogun State. The boat operator who was attacked is one of our members. He told us that the gunmen felt intimidated by the presence of the policeman.

“The ladies came back without their money and phones. Policemen from Igando were here on Monday and Tuesday to assess the area. Although the place of robbery fell under Ogun State, here was the nearest hospital the sergeant could have been rushed to. He, however, did not make it.

“It could happen to anyone. I urge the government to station military officers around the Agbara Bridge. That area is notorious for militants’ attacks. From the Agbara Bridge, you can connect the Lagos Lagoon. If the government ensures security on the waterways, this will not happen again.

“On our own part, we take safety measures. We allow only registered boat operators. Any strange face that brings a boat here is reported to the police. We also use lifejackets and adhere to the regulations given by the state government.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the killing.

She added that the command was working with the Ogun State Police Command to get to the root of the incident.

She said, “Hadi, with Force Number 397842, was shot dead by hoodlums in a boat on the Totowu Waterway in Ogun State, while on transit to Lagos.

“The shooting was done in a yet-to-be-determined circumstance. The corpse has been deposited in a morgue for an autopsy.

“Although the incident occurred under the Ogun State jurisdiction, the command will partner the Ogun command to get to the root of the matter.”

Farewell game for Amodu and Keshi scheduled for July 23

The Lagos State Government in conjunction with the Sports Writer’s Association of Nigeria (Lagos Chapter) and the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, have set up a committee to oversee the Lagos farewell testimonial match for late ex-Super Eagles coaches Amodu Shaibu and Stephen Keshi. The match has been scheduled for the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos on July 23.

The chairman of the committee who is also the President-General of the NFSC, Rafiu Ladipo, said the event is meant to raise money for the families of the departed coaches and also celebrate them.

He said, “The match would have Eagles players battle against a Lagos All Stars team in the main match of the day, while the curtain-raiser would be a game between the Lagos SWAN team and the supporters club. This would be followed by a musical concert where prominent Nigerian musicians and comedians would perform in the entertainment aspect of the programme. This aspect of the event will be coordinated by veteran musician, Chris Mba.”

The coordinator of the event, Effiong Nyong, said, “Amodu and Keshi must be celebrated with fanfare as they left their footprints on the sands of time. It is sad that we won’t see the two coaches that qualified Nigeria for three editions of the World Cup out of the five the country competed in, again.”

Istanbul Ataturk airport attack: 36 dead , 147 injured

A gun and bomb attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk international airport has killed 36 people and 147 injured, officials say.
Three attackers opened fire near an entry point to the terminal and blew themselves up after police fired at them, officials say.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said early signs suggested the so-called Islamic State was behind the attack.

Recent bombings have been linked to either IS or Kurdish separatists.

Tuesday’s attack looked like a major co-ordinated assault, says the BBC’s Mark Lowen.

Ataturk airport was long seen as a vulnerable target, our Turkey correspondent adds, reporting from a plane stuck on the tarmac in Istanbul.

There are X-ray scanners at the entrance to the terminal but security checks for cars are limited.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the attack should serve as a turning point in the global fight against militant groups.

“The bombs that exploded in Istanbul today could have gone off at any airport in any city around the world,” he said.

The US called the attack “heinous”, and said saying America remained “steadfast in our support for Turkey”.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: “We grieve for the victims. We stand by Turkey”.

Speaking several hours after Tuesday’s attack, Mr Yildirim said at least 36 people were killed and many wounded, some seriously.

He also said foreigners were likely to be among the dead.

Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag put the number of injured at 147.

Footage has emerged on social media that appears to show a police officer shooting one of the attackers, who detonates a suicide belt as he is lying injured on the ground.

Flights in and out of the airport were suspended after the attack.

The US Federal Aviation Administration grounded all flights between the US and Istanbul.

Taxis were used to rush casualties to hospital after the attack.

Eyewitness Paul Roos told the Associated Press news agency that he was due to fly home to South Africa when the attackers struck.

“We came up from the arrivals to the departures, up the escalator when we heard these shots going off,” he said.

“There was this guy going roaming around, he was dressed in black and he had a handgun.”

Charles Michel, the Prime Minister of Belgium whose capital city was targeted by bombers in March, tweeted from the EU summit in Brussels: “Our thoughts are with the victims of the attacks at Istanbul’s airport. We condemn these atrocious acts of violence.”

In December, a blast on the tarmac at a different Istanbul airport, Sabiha Gokcen, killed a cleaner. That attack was claimed by a Kurdish group, the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK).

10 October, Ankara: More than 100 killed at peace rally outside railway station. Claimed by IS

20 July, Suruc, near Syrian border: 34 people killed in bombing in Kurdish town. IS blamed

Security concerns and a Russian boycott over last year’s downing of a Russian military jet on the Turkey-Syria border have hit the Turkish tourist sector this year.

More than 61 million passengers travelled through Ataturk airport in 2015.

A US state department travel warning for Turkey, originally published in March and updated on Monday, urges US citizens to “exercise heightened vigilance and caution when visiting public access areas, especially those heavily frequented by tourists.”
