Germany legend Klose retires from Football

The Germany legend, and all-time leading scorer in World Cup finals, has decided to hang up his boots after a long and successful career

All-time Germany top-scorer Miroslav Klose has opted to hang up his boots after leaving Lazio at the end of the 2015-16 campaign following the expiry of his contract.

Klose had been linked with a move to MLS and former club Kaiserslautern over the past few months, but has opted to retire instead and take up a position with Germany’s national team.

The 38-year-old will be following an individual education and traineeship under national team coach Joachim Low and sporting director Hansi Flick with an eye on a future coaching career, while also joining Low’s backroom staff.

“I enjoyed my biggest successes with the national team. It was a great time and unforgettable for me. That’s why I am happy to return to the DFB,” Klose told the DFB website.

“Over the past few months, the idea of staying on the pitch in another position, as a coach, got into my mind. I already enjoyed developing tactics, preparing for games and reading the game during my playing days.

“I am grateful to Jogi Low and Hansi Flick that they are offering me this opportunity.”

Klose started his professional career with Homburg and also wore the jerseys of Kaiserslautern, Werder Bremen, Bayern Munich and Lazio.

He enjoyed his biggest successes with Bayern, where he won two Bundesliga titles and two DFB-Pokals. The striker won the Bundesliga top-scorer award in 2005-06.

The attacker made 137 appearances for Germany – with only Lothar Matthaus winning more caps – and scored an impressive 71 goals to become his country’s all-time top goalscorer.

He won the World Cup in 2014, having finished as a runner-up in 2002. Klose is also the all-time top scorer at World Cup finals, with 16 strikes spread over four tournaments.

CBN warns against patronage of ‘wonder banks’

The Central Bank of Nigeria on Monday warned Nigerians against patronising what it called ‘wonder banks’, stating that their activities were not regulated by it.

The Head, Consumer Protection Department, CBN, Hajiya Kadija Kassim, stated this during a mentoring programme for students of the Government Secondary School, Suleja, Niger State.

The mentoring programme, which was held simultaneously in over 200 schools, was part of activities to mark the World Savings Day.

The apex bank’s warning is coming at a time when the huge unemployment situation in the country is making a lot of people to take interest in an online investment scheme tagged: ‘MMM Federal Republic of Nigeria (nigeria.mmm.net)’.

The platform has embarked on an aggressive online media campaign to lure the investing public to participate in what it called “mutual aid financial network,” with a monthly investment return of 30 per cent.

Kassim, while responding to a question asked by one of the students, described the scheme as fraudulent since it was not supported by any business model.

She said, “We have heard about the activities of MMM, but I want to warn you against it because they are wonder banks that are not regulated.

“Desist from their activities because they are fraudulent.”

She said the theme of this year’s World Savings Day, ‘Don’t save what is left after spending, but spend what is left after saving’, would assist in creating the needed awareness on the need to save.

She added, “The World Savings Day is a tradition created with the objective of stressing the importance of savings for modern economies and individuals alike.

“The primary objective is to increase awareness on financial literacy among various segments of the general public to sensitise them to the importance of saving, earning a livelihood, inculcating a savings habit, and generating employment and entrepreneurship for personal and national development.”

Sharia law – Kano state set to prosecute 11 women for drinking , smoking and seducing women

The Faggae Outpost of the Kano State Hisbah Board (Sharia Police) on Monday said it had commenced the prosecution of 11 women for allegedly engaging in social vices. Salisu Umar, the Commander, Special Services of the board, said the suspects were apprehended around the Sabongari area in the metropolis.

He said they were arrested during a special patrol. Mr. Umar said the suspects were found drinking alcohol, smoking cannabis and romancing with men other than their husbands or close relations, which is contrary to the Sharia legal system.

He said the state had been practicing the Islamic legal code that prohibits such illicit attitudes, stressing that the board would intensify its efforts to patrol identified flash points.

“The suspects are females between the ages of 21 and 24 and were apprehended around midnight at beer parlours in Faringida and Abedie Road in Sabongari. We have brought them before a competent Sharia court for prosecution,” he said.

Mr. Umar said the board would not condone any act of immorality, stressing that it would arrest and prosecute whoever engages in such vices. He noted that four out of the suspects were divorcees with kids, while one of them was carrying a three-month-old pregnancy.

Ambode is doing well –PDP

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has lauded what it termed the outstanding performance of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of the All Progressives Congress in the state.

The spokesman for the opposition PDP chapter, Taofik Gani, said in a statement on Monday, that Ambode had taken government’s presence to many areas in the state allegedly abandoned for eight years by his predecessor, Babatunde Fashola.

The PDP advised President Muhammadu Buhari to be wary of Fashola, who, it said, had a penchant for making unverifiable claims of achievements.

The opposition party also expressed reservation over Buhari’s decision to give three ministerial portfolios relating to engineering to Fashola, who is a lawyer.

The PDP berated Fashola for celebrating a proposed injection of 30 megawatts into the national grid, when, according to the PDP, the minister had been provided with resources enough to inject over 500 megawatts into it.

Gani said instead of celebrating, Fashola should have been sober for allegedly mismanaging the country’s power generation from “6000MW when he took over to now less than 2000MW.”

He said, “We sincerely advise President Buhari to be very wary of the deceptive skills of Fashola who will usually hype and celebrate even mediocrity.

Fashola has a penchant for misrepresenting facts of his achievements in government and would always rationalise obvious inadequacies.”

“As governor of Lagos State, he enjoyed unprecedented revenues and donations, yet he left many services untouched or unfinished. He, however, deliberately funded his pro-Fashola media and commentators so much that pseudo and exaggerated achievements were ascribed to him.

“He employed this model to promote his eight years government of mediocrity. Fashola ended up making Lagos State the biggest debtor with local and foreign debts well over N1trn.”

Shocking – Lagos hotelier turns job seeker into Sex worker

Victor Obano, who manages Tisa Hotel, in Ijegun, Lagos State, has been arrested for allegedly turning a 23-year-old job seeker, Elizabeth, from Akwa Ibom, into a commercial sex worker, after allegedly luring and promising her employment in Lagos State, Punchng reports.

Elizabeth, a mother of two, reportedly got tired of being a commercial sex worker, and on October 5, told her elder sister, on the telephone, what she was going through.

The sister was said to have informed the police at the Anti-Robbery Squad of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, leading to Obano’s arrest.

Another accomplice, a commercial sex worker, identified as Grace Edet (pictured), who allegedly was Elizabeth’s supervisor, was also picked up by the police. Obano, who admitted to have brought the victim from Akwa Ibom, said he only assisted her to find a means of livelihood.

He said, “I am not a human trafficker. It was only this lady that I brought from the village. I met with her father and he explained her predicament. She was living a miserable life.

So, I decided to get a job for her. The police arrested me because I seized her phones. They said I did not want her to contact her family members, but I collected her phone because I did not want her to have an affair with several men. .

The arrangement was that I would be paying her and she would also hustle in the hotel and send the money to take care of her father. The police should let this matter be settled amicably. It is a family issue.”

Edet revealed that Obano had instructed her to train Elizabeth in commercial sex.  She said, “I have worked in the hotel for some years. I am a commercial sex worker. He handed her over to me, saying I should teach her some tricks of the trade.”

Breaking: Inter sack De Boer

The former Ajax coach bites the dust at San Siro after only 14 games in charge, having won just five of those, with Stefano Vecchi taking charge temporarily against Southampton

Frank de Boer has been sacked as head coach of Inter in the wake of Sunday’s Serie A defeat by Sampdoria.

A first-half strike from Fabio Quagliarella consigned the Nerazzurri to a 1-0 loss at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, leaving them with just two wins from their last eight matches in all competitions.

Pressure had been mounting on De Boer, who only took charge in August, with the club sitting 12th in the table after four wins from 11 matches.

Chief executive Michael Bolingbroke insisted that De Boer had “100 per cent” backing before the defeat at Sampdoria but, with just five wins from his first 14 games at the helm, the Dutchman has been given the axe.

The club have placed Primavera coach Stefano Vecchi in temporary charge ahead of Thursday’s Europa League game against Southampton.

“FC Internazionale Milano announce that it has today terminated the contract of coach Frank de Boer with immediate effect,” an official club statement read.

“Inter Primavera coach Stefano Vecchi will take temporary charge of the first team for Thursday’s UEFA Europa League match against Southampton.

“Inter would like to place on record its thanks to Frank and his coaching team for their work done with the club over the past months and wishes them the best for the future.

“Further announcements regarding the first team coaching position will be made in due course.”
