APC should hide its head in shame for deceiving Nigerians with change – APGA

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has laughed off the claim by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that it would take over Anambra State in 2017.

APGA also alleged that the APC had planned to use its federal might to cause a revolution that would put other political parties on the run during the 2017 gubernatorial election in the state.

Describing the alleged threat as “treasonable felony,” the Anambra State Secretary of APGA, Sir Tony Ifeanya called on security agencies to note the statement by the APC state secretary and hold him responsible in the event of any such incident in the state.

“We want to draw the attention of the Federal Government in whose name, the APC Anambra State is threatening to cause a revolution in Anambra, boasting that when the time comes we shall all leave Anambra. This is treasonable felony.

“The APC scribe has told everybody ahead of time that they intend to cause havoc in the state in 2017 gubernatorial election and should be held responsible by law enforcement agencies when such happens.”

Ifeanya said APGA had a firm grip of the state, having produced successive governments that had been doing well and cannot be wished away by the APC in the state.

“The APC and its scribe instead of hiding their face in shame for deceiving Nigerians of a purported change agenda that never was, and for bringing untold hardship to Nigerians because of their lack of vision and mission, are dreaming of taking over Anambra in 2017.

“When for over a year now, they have not been able to give Nigerians a clear road map of where we are going, do they think that Anambrarians could be fooled as they fooled Nigerians. Anambra people are wise and cannot fall to their empty boasts.

“We do not want any negative change in Anambra State. Obiano is a man with clear vision of what he came to do in Anambra State and is doing it not like APC who has no agenda for Nigeria.

“As I speak, the Federal Government owes Anambra state over N43 billion on federal projects executed by the governor just to ensure that Anambra people are still making ends meet. If the Federal Government of APC has paid the state government the N43 billion it owes the state, our governor will not be talking of borrowing from anywhere after all when all other states were going for bailout our dynamic governor rejected it.

“Or what do you want him to do when your party at the centre refuse(s) to or are reluctant to pay the debt. You want him to fold his hands and start complaining like most of your APC governors. And because he is not doing so, you are now threatening to take over Anambra by force in 2017”, he stated.

N4.6bn fraud: Court remands Fani-Kayode, others in prison

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday ordered the remand of a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, and two others in prison over an alleged fraud of N4.6bn.

Justice Suleiman Hassan gave the remand order shortly after Fani-Kayode, Nenadi Usman and Danjuma Yusuf were arraigned before him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The judge said the three accused persons were to remain in the prison custody pending the determination of their bail applications, the hearing of which has been fixed for July 1, 2016.

Joined with Fani-Kayode, Usman and Yusuf in the 17 counts filed by the EFCC was a company, Joint Trust Dimension Nigeria Limited.

The charges bordered on conspiracy, unlawful retention of proceeds of theft and money laundering.

Fani-Kayode, who was the spokesperson for former President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign organisation in the 2015 general election, was accused of conspiring with the others to directly and indirectly retain various sums which the EFCC claimed they ought to have reasonably known were proceeds of them.

The accused persons were said to have allegedly committed the offences between January 8, 2015 and March 25, 2015 in the build-up to the general election.

In one of the counts, the EFCC alleged that Fani-Kayode, who it listed as the seconnd defendant in the charge sheet, and his co-defendants conspired among themselves to “indirectly  retain the sum of N1,500, 000,000.00, which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: stealing.”

The EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, told the court that the said conspiracy and indirect retention of the N1.5bn constituted an offence under Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012, punishable under Section 15(3)( 4) of the same Act.

In another count, the EFCC alleged that Fani-Kayode “directly retained the sum of N350m,” which the anti-graft agency claimed that he ought to have “reasonably known formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: stealing.”

Fani-Kayode was accused of directly using parts of the money at various times, including a N250,650,000.00, which he allegedly used between March 20 and 25, 2015.

Fani-Kayode was also accused of making a cash transaction of N24m with one Olubode Oke, said to still be at large, on February 12, 2015 “to Paste Poster Co of 125, Lewis Street, Lagos Island.”

The duo were said to have made the transaction without going through any financial institution an act the EFCC claimed was contrary to sections 1(a) and 16(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and punishable  under Section 16(2)(b) of the same Act.
‘Not guilty’

Upon reading the charges to them on Tuesday, all the accused persons pleaded not guilty.

Counsel for Fani-Kayode, Mr. Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), and that of Usman, Mr. S.I. Ameh (SAN), subsequently informed the court that they had filed applications for the bail of their clients.

On his own part, Yusuf’s counsel, Mr. Fred Orbih, who also indicated his plan to apply for his client’s bail, however, said he had yet to do so.

In a short ruling, Justice Hassan adjourned the case till July 1 for hearing of the three bail applications.

The judge however, ordered the remand of the accused persons in the prison custody.

The EFCC listed 17 witnesses that will testify against the defendants when the trial commences.

Previous governments battered Nigeria’s economy – Buhari defends APC

President Muhammadu Buhari says his administration is working very hard to restructure the Nigerian economy, battered by several years of mismanagement.
A statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said Buhari stated this in Abuja on Monday while receiving the Chief Global CEO of Unilever, Mr Paul Polman.

The statement quoted the President as saying that Nigeria is paying dearly for the incompetent management of the massive revenue that accrued to the nation from oil.

It also quoted Buhari as saying that the country was particularly paying dearly for over a decade’s decay of critical infrastructure.

”We refused to save for the rainy day. Now the rain is beating us.

“No money, no savings, nothing. And we are thoroughly wet from the rains,” he said.

President Buhari said Nigeria was paying the price for turning itself into a mono-economy.

He, however, assured that the country would soon be able to feed its citizens and even export, given his administration’s focus on the development of the agriculture sector.

He assured that the Federal Government would fast-track the implementation of strategies to ease doing business and to attract more investors to Nigeria.

“We want to create jobs, and supporting manufacturing is one way to do it.

“As soon as we have stabilised our budget, I would personally be interested in the manufacturing sector, particularly in the generation of essential raw materials,’’ the President said.

The Chief Global CEO of Unilever had told the President that the conglomerate had been in Nigeria for 93 years, making it the oldest manufacturing concern in the country.

“Our products are more Nigerian than other Nigerian brands.

“Despite the economic downturn, there are opportunities to further advance our business here.

“The situation to invest and continue to invest here is very encouraging,” he said.

According to Polman, Unilever has invested at least N15 billion in Nigeria in the past three years.(NAN)

Vandals kidnap Arepo landlord, demand N10m ransom

Some suspected pipeline vandals have abducted a landlord, Samson Olufemi, on Voera Estate, Arepo area of Ogun State.

Correspondent learnt that the vandals had entered the estate through the creek and scaled the fence into the victim’s house on Michael Ajao Street.

They were said to have turned off his generator to trick him out.

Our correspondent was told that Olufemi, who worked in a brewery, however, sent his son outside to check what went wrong and restart the generator.

The vandals were said to have emerged from their hideout, forced the boy back into the house and abducted his father.

Our correspondent gathered that the victim had only packed into the estate four months ago, after completing the building.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the vandals looted the family’s valuables before disappearing with Olufemi into the creek.

He said, “The incident happened last Friday night. The vandals jumped over the fence into the man’s house and switched off his generator.

“The man, who was surprised that the generator went off, asked his son to go check what happened. The boy went out, turned on the generator and was about going inside when the vandals held him. They asked him to lead them inside.

“When they got in, they ransacked the building and took jewellery, mobile phones, laptops, an iPad, and money. They took all the valuables they could lay their hands on. After they finished, they disappeared with the man.”

A source said the vandals had been communicating with Olufemi’s wife, adding that they had demanded N10m as ransom.

It was gathered that the case was reported at the Ibafo Police Division.

Correspondent had reported that the vandals shot dead an Assistant Superintendent of Police in the locality about a month ago.

A resident, who called for government’s help, said security took a turn for the worse when the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation stopped pumping fuel through the pipelines in the community.

He explained that people had been leaving the estate in droves, saying residents could no longer sleep with their eyes closed.

He said, “They have always been in the creek, but they never gave us any problem. However, when there were no more pipelines to burst, they unleashed terror on us.

“The first time they came, they said, ‘Since you are the ones that asked them to stop pumping fuel, you will now be providing the food we will eat.’ We want the government to send them out of the creek so we can have peace of mind.”

A landlord, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said efforts by residents to increase security in the area had been abortive.

He said, “We arranged with some military personnel to patrol our estate, but it didn’t work. The route through which the vandals usually enter into the estate was illuminated. It also didn’t work.

“What makes us prone to the attacks is that the estate is surrounded by water.”

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the kidnap, adding that investigation was ongoing.

He said, “We are on it. We suspect they are militants. There was a meeting today involving the government and stakeholders on how to put an end to their criminal acts in Ogun State, including the attacks on our communities. We will rescue the victim.”

Police arrest dad for impregnating his daughter

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man, Raymond Ike Iwuanyanwu, 41, for allegedly raping and impregnating his 15-year-old daughter, at Ajao Estate, Isolo. Raymond said that frustration led him into the act.
His words: “I started sleeping with her sometime around January, after I lost my job. I am a transporter, but I took to alcohol after I lost my job and could not meet up with my responsibilities as the head of the house.” It was learnt that the victim had been taken into custody by the Lagos State Government.

Raymond had also allegedly beaten his daughter and wife, warning them not to disclose the incident to anyone. The girl’s mom, however, informed her family members, who went to the girl’s school to confirm the story from her.

The case was thereafter reported to the state Ministry of Youth and Social Development, which informed the police, who arrested Raymond, last Wednesday. The pregnancy was said to have been aborted before the girl was rescued. The mother was arrested on Thursday for her involvement in the alleged abortion.

The Coordinator, Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, Lagos State, Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, said the victim was safe in government’s custody. The case, which is currently being investigated at the Gender Unit of Lagos State Police Command, will be charged to Ikeja Magistrate’s Court today.

Stepmother remanded for cutting off baby’s penis

A 22-year-old woman, Bara’atu Rabiu, has been remanded in the Minna Medium Security Prison for allegedly cutting off the penis of her rival’s one-month-old baby, Buhari.

She was arraigned on Monday on one count of attempted homicide before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Minna.

Correspondent learnt that Bara’atu allegedly cut off the victim’s penis at their home in Kuta town, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

It was learnt that the suspect had been married to her husband, Mohammed Rabiu, for seven years, without a child.

She allegedly cut off the baby’s penis to punish him for marrying a second wife.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bala James, explained that the suspect wanted to kill the victim, adding that the child, who was named after President Muhammadu Buhari, survived the attack.

He said, “The woman used a sharp knife to cut through the genitals of the one-month-old baby. She had been married to her husband for seven years without any child. So, out of pressure, the man decided to marry a second wife.

“When the second wife had a baby, she became angry and frustrated. She thought the best thing to do was to kill the child.

“On June 21, around 10pm, she took the baby to the backyard of their house and used a sharp knife to cut off his penis.

“The cry of the baby attracted neighbours, who rushed to the place and found him in a pool of blood. The suspect wanted to run away, but she was overpowered. She was handed over to the police, while the baby was taken to a hospital.”

The baby was said to have been taken to the Accident and Emergency Ward of the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida Specialist Hospital, Minna.

Our correspondent was told that a surgical operation to enable him to pass out urine was immediately performed.

The Head of Department, General Outpatient Ward of the hospital, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed, said the boy might never regain the use of his private parts.

He explained that all the tissues in the affected part had been dead before he was brought to the hospital.

He said, “He is doing well – health-wise. He survived the attack. However, there is no assurance of the penis getting back because all the tissues were dead when he was brought into the hospital. We just had to conduct a surgery for him to be able to pass urine.

“Medically, for him to regain the use of his manhood will be difficult.  If the team that was supposed to work on him had been around immediately, maybe the situation would have been different. For such a case, you need a general surgeon, a neurologist and a plastic surgeon. But these were not available. His future right now is in the hands of God. Another possibility is if there is artificial attachment.

“I really pity the boy’s condition. I cannot imagine that somebody will do this to a baby. It is better for the child to die than for him to be in this condition.  Even if he survives, what purpose will he be living for?”

The suspect, who was arraigned on Monday on one count of attempted homicide, was remanded in prison by the court.
