Corrupt people should be jailed – Soyinka

The Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has said anyone who is found guilty in the current Federal Government’s anti-corruption war should be jailed.

He said this on Thursday in Abeokuta at the sideline of activities marking his 82 birthday.

He clocked 82 on Wednesday.

Soyinka had earlier played host to pupils from 82 secondary schools across the state, who participated in the Wole Soyinka Essay Competition titled, ‘Challenges or Not, You Must Love Your Country.’

The Nobel laureate, who had been asked a question around the theme of the 7th edition of the Wole Soyinka International Cultural Exchange programme entitled, ‘Corruption: A battle for the arts; called on all stakeholders across the nation to join hands in the fight against corruption.

The respected scholar said the nation must be returned to its place of honour and dignity where anybody found to be corrupt in the society should be ashamed to walk freely.

He said, “There is only one way for corrupt people; it ends in the prison. It ends in Ibara or Oba (prisons in Abeokuta) or Kirikiri(Lagos prison).

“Yes, it’s a battle for everybody and definitely the arts must be in front as usual. Not just the arts, the theologians, the moralists, the philosophers, the architects, builders, it’s everybody’s work.

“The law, Nigeria Bar Association; everybody is involved, even including you (journalists).”

Soyinka while speaking on the theme of the event enjoined creative writers and artistes to use their work to fight corruption.

The state Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, who was also present at the event,  urged the pupils and indeed the nation’s  youths to emulate the life of heroes like Prof. Soyinka.

He advised them never to give up on Nigeria in spite of the many challenges facing the nation.

Amosun said, “Just like Prof. Soyinka is doing, you must continue to show love and support for the country irrespective of the challenges facing the nation.”

The governor also expressed joy that many Nigerians appeared to appreciate arts while promising to extend the participation in the subsequent edition of the programme to all pupils across the country and beyond.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of trophies to Miss Naomi Akinremi of St. Peters College, Olomore, Abeokuta; Miss Adedoyin Sotonwa of Mayflower Secondary School, Ikenne; and Friday Zacheaus of Adeola Odutola College, Ijebu-Ode who came first, second and third respectively, in the essay competition.

Tinubu’s wife called me dog, thug – says Melaye

The All Progressives Congress member representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, on Thursday said he called Senator Oluremi Tinubu a stupid woman on the floor of the Senate during an executive session because she also referred to him as a dog and a thug.

Melaye, who addressed parliamentary reporters in the National Assembly, however, denied using vulgar words against Oluremi, the wife of the leader of the APC, Senator Bola Tinubu.

He vowed not to apologise to Tinubu for allegedly assaulting his wife even as he said that the APC leader could not determine his future political career because the politician was not God.

Melaye said, “…I did not use any insolent, abusive, degrading or mannerless language. So, there was no reaction from any of our colleagues as regards my presentation. After I spoke, so many other senators spoke and I did not mention the name of any senator while I was making my presentation.

“Unfortunately, Senator Oluremi Tinubu got up and for reasons only known to her, the first thing she said was that she’s being harassed in this chamber by Senator Melaye.

“I kept quiet at that point. …At that point I was still very calm, she got up again and said that ‘this thug must be tamed.’ At that point, I got up and I told her that she is very stupid. The next statement from her is that ‘you are a dog.’

“She called me a dog and when she called me a dog I stood up and I reacted and I told her that this is not Bourdillon and that she should look at my face, I am not one of those senators who normally come to prostrate to them in Bourdillon.

“ I told her I am from Kogi State, I am not from Lagos State and that there would never be a day that I will come to you for political assistance. These were my words and she went on shouting dog, thug.

“I want to tell you gentlemen of the press that for every action there must be a reaction. When I got up to address my colleagues she was not the only senator there.”

Melaye also denied ever saying he would impregnate Mrs. Tinubu.

He said, “It is fallacious, malicious and a lie that I said I will impregnate Mrs. Tinubu. Biologically, it is even impossible to impregnate Mrs. Tinubu because she has reached menopause.

“If you also look at that statement for those of us who are intellectually mobile, how can you say you want to beat somebody and at the same time you want to impregnate the person if you juxtapose the two is there any correlation? Does it make any logical sense? So, when they planted this falsehood they did not think deeply.”

He also said though he read in the newspaper that the APC leader was demanding an apology from him for abusing his wife, he would not do so now.

“I read from the social media that Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu through his media aide is asking me to apologise. I will not believe that a man of his calibre will ask for apology without hearing from both parties.

“However, when I get confirmation that Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu actually is the one asking me to apologise, I will also address him accordingly.”

Meanwhile, the South-West zone of the APC has warned Melaye to stay away from the zone for threatening to beat Mrs. Tinubu.

In a statement signed by the Zonal National Secretary, APC South-West, Ayo Afolabi, on Thursday, the party described Melaye as an example of ‘vagabond in power’, saying, however, that it was not surprised by Melaye’s conduct towards a woman because he never had a successful marriage.

“Meanwhile Senator Melaye should regard the South West Zone as a no-go area if he refused to tender a public apology and desist from such unruly behaviours on any colleague from any party of this country in the future. A word is enough for the wise.”

The party also called on the Inspector General of Police to take note of Melaye’s threat to kill anybody that testified against the accused persons in the Senate forgery case.

Also, women in the Osun State chapter of the APC have condemned the alleged assault of Mrs. Tinubu by Melaye.

Terry will always be Chelsea captain – Conte

The new Blues manager underlined the defender’s importance to his first-team squad, insisting the 34-year-old’s influence will be felt both on and off the pitch

Antonio Conte has insisted John Terry will always be Chelsea captain, with his influence felt both on and off the pitch.

Speaking to reporters as Blues manager for the first time, the Italian was quizzed on Terry’s role in his first-team squad following two successive seasons of speculation over the defender’s future.

Terry went on to pen another new one-year contract in late May, six weeks after an agreement with Conte was announced by the club, and the former Italy head coach underlined the captain’s importance to him.

John Terry signed a contract as a player, not as a different role,” he told reporters.

“He’s the captain of this team and a great player, with great personality and great charisma. I want to speak with him because he knows the club and the right spirit for the club.

“For me he is an important player. All the players know that I see the pitch during training to choose my starting eleven.

John Terry is captain, when he plays and when he doesn’t play. He is the captain always.”

Conte also confirmed his involvement in Terry being handed another contract extension, which was reported at the time to involve a heavy reduction in salary.

He added: “John Terry is an important player for me, for the fans, for the club. We made all the decisions together, I’m very pleased he signed a new deal with Chelsea.

“I spoke with him on different occasions, the most important thing was when John signed he was very happy.”

See Igbo leaders’ new demands from Nigeria to suppress Biafra

  • Following the unending agitation for a Biafran republic, governors and leaders from the south-eastern part of Nigeria have met in Imo state
  • The leaders expressed dismay that while Igbo people were in other parts of the country developing the zones, they have abandoned their region
  • The expressed commitment to the unity of the country but asked indigenes of the zone to bring development to ensure employment of people from the area Rather than continue with agitations for secession, leaders from the south-eastern part of Nigeria have demanded that their people must decide to develop the region.

The leaders, who included governors, restated that they are committed to the unity of the country, but that there must be a resolve by Igbo people to bring development down to the region. They lamented how indigenes of the zone which makes up the third largest ethnic group in the country would continue to develop other regions without replicating such in their native land so as to create employment.

There had been agitations across the region for Biafra, but some leaders have kicked against the struggle maintaining that what the country needs is restructuring. The meeting was convened by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, an Igbo socio-cultural group but hosted by Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state. Some of the leaders who attended the meeting, according to The Nation, include former chief of general staff in the General Ibrahim Babangida, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe, Abia state Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, Okorocha, Enugu state deputy governor, Cicilia Ezeilo, former governors of old Anambra state, Jim Nwobodo and Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Imo state deputy governor, Eze Madumere, industrialist Pascal Dozie, and former chief of naval staff, Rear Admiral Alison Madueke (retired).

According to the leaders, Igbo people have all it takes to make the region great. President-General Gary Enwo Igariwe, said at the meeting: “We should come together and solve our problems. We are known for our resilience and industry. Thirty per cent of investments in Lagos and Abuja is owned by Ndigbo but now we are calling on our people to think home and build another Abuja in Igbo land. “We should invest at home to create jobs for our people. So, today is a special day because we have decided as a people to close ranks and proffer solutions to our problems.” The guest speaker at the event, Professor Anya O Anya, said Igbo people needed re-orientation.

“The solutions to our problems can only be found within and not outside. We are the only ones that can solve our own problems. “We are preparing to rebuild Igbo land to meet with the Nigeria of the 21st Century. “We have gathered because the time is critical so that we can chart a new course for our people. “There has never been a time we are faced with a barrage of problems like now so we need our past to find solutions to our problems,” he said.
