Pope Francis departs Rome for his first African tour

A plane left Rome on Wednesday carrying Pope Francis to Nairobi to start his first African tour.

After two days in Kenya, the 78-year-old Argentinian pontiff is scheduled to head for Uganda and the Central African Republic, ending his tour on Monday.

Francis was scheduled to meet Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday evening, before celebrating Mass in front of up to 500 000 people in Nairobi in the largest event of the trip on Thursday.

Africa is home to an estimated 180 million Catholics, and numbers are rapidly rising.

The trip is Francis’ 11th one abroad since he became pope in 2013.
