An American Airlines flight attendant has been arrested by the FBI for allegedly starting a fire then pretending to be a hero and trying to extinguish it.
The bizarre incident happened on board the busy passenger plane from Dallas, Texas to Detroit, Michigan earlier this month.
According to reports the Johnathan Tafoya-Montano created an elaborate plan to action his attention seeking incident on February 1.
It is alleged that shortly thereafter he pretended to discover the blaze and put the smouldering paper towels out using a fire extinguisher.
According to documents filed in US District Court, after putting out the fire he then declared a state of emergency on board the plane.
The captain was informed as well as the control tower and the flight was granted emergency status to land at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
No-one was injured in the incident.
