A man accused of raping a three-year old girl in Phillipi, Cape Town was arrested on Saturday after the girl’s father handed him over to the community.
According to the Weekend Argus, on Friday, after the child was raped, residents of Sweet Home said they had seen a man, naked from the waist down, with the girl naked on a pillow in his shack.”
The toddler’s father allegedly tracked the man down and instead of calling the cops, handed him over to the informal settlement’s community members for interrogation.
The residents allegedly beat the suspect.
It is believed that the suspect confessed to the rape.
The mob then called the police, though it is unclear whether he was injured by the time the officials arrived.
The girl’s father told Weekend Argus on Saturday, “I found him and did as I was told by the community. I have nothing to do with the police and did not want to be victimised by the community for having handed him straight over to them after I had found him.
“I got here and I just said to them, ‘Here he is, you can ask him all you want.’ They started to beat him up while I had gone back into my house to be with my family.”
“He confessed that he had done this several times to other children as well, but he did not say who those children were.”
“When he was asked what he did to my child, he said he had only put his penis into her mouth, but he had a wash tub next to the bed, which we are certain he was going to use to wash my child to clear any evidence after raping her.
“I am glad he is out of our community and he is not welcome back here,” he said.
Police spokeswoman Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed the arrest.
