21-year-old man imprisoned over theft of N10,000

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday sentenced a 21-year-old unemployed man, Benjamin Sunday, to one- year imprisonment for stealing N10,000 cash and a phone valued at N1,000.

The Magistrate, Mrs M.O Osinbajo, sentenced Sunday after he pleaded guilty to the charge stealing. “Based on the plea of the accused, the facts of this case and the plea for leniency, I hereby sentence you to one year imprisonment without an option of fine,” she said.

Earlier the Prosecutor, ASP Frank Inah, told the court that the convict committed the offence on March 27 at No. 1, Ipodo Market, Ikeja, Lagos. He said the convict snatched the bag that contained the money and phone from one Foluke Makinde, a fruit vendor at the market.

“The accused snatched the bag while the complainant was attending to a customer. “The complainant shouted for help and the accused was caught while trying to escape and was handed over to the police,” he said. Inah said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
