The Hawks have revealed that a mysterious fedora hat is currently at the centre of the “South Africa Goalkeeper” Senzo Meyiwa murder investigation.
According to The Sunday Independent, The Hawks on Friday said they found the checkered men’s hat at the scene of the crime, and that it contains DNA evidence that might help them identify the murder suspects.
Speaking to the paper, Head of the Gauteng Hawks, General Prince Mokotedi, said: “We have already identified our potential suspects in this case. However, we have this mystery hat (and) none of the people who were in the house can tell who it belongs to. It was found in the house on the night of the murder.
“We had it checked at our forensic laboratories and we could trace the DNA of two different unknown people. None of the DNA of the known people who were in the house matched,” he added.
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa died on 26 October 2014, after he was shot at the Vosloorus family home of his mistress, Afro-pop star Kelly Khumalo, with whom he had a child.
It is believed that the witnesses present at the time of the shooting were Kelly Khumalo, her mother Ntombi, her sister Zandi, her sister’s boyfriend Longwe Twala, Meyiwa’s childhood friend Tumelo Madlala, and another friend known only as Mthoko.
Mokotedi also called on the public to assist them in their efforts to track down the owner of the fedora. The police are offering a R250 000 reward.
“This piece of evidence is crucial because it will be putting the owner of the hat at the murder scene. We really appeal for assistance,” he said.
