Model mum-of-one found hanged after fearing she was about to be forced into an arranged marriage

Nadia Menaz, 24, had tried to stop the arranged marriage being forced on her by her ‘mum and dad’ and three siblings

A mum-of-one who resisted having an arranged marriage set up by her family hanged herself to take her own life, a coroner has ruled.

Nadia Menaz, 24, had taken out a ‘forced marriage protection order’ in December 2014 preventing her ‘father’ Sabir Hussain, 60, and ‘mother’ Ruksana Kousar, 55, and three siblings forcing her into an arranged marriage.

Her inquest also heard Mrs Menaz, of Oldham, had discovered that Mr Hussain and Mrs Kousar were actually her aunt and uncle and this had contributed to bouts of depression.

She was also involved in ongoing criminal proceedings against a relative.

The inquest at Heywood coroner’s court heard that she had been suffering from depression because of these issues and she was found dead in her home by husband Umar Rasool.

The pair married in an Islamic ceremony in 2011 but the union was not recognised under English law and her family did not approve of her husband.

Five months after taking out the ‘forced marriage protection order’ she was found dead.

Police investigations concluded at the inquest there was no third party involvement.
