Sitting in front of the TV for more than three and a half hours a day has been linked to seven killer conditions.

A study found evenings in front of the box leave us more likely to die from cancer , liver disease or Parkinson’s, even if we are active for the rest of the day.

Brits watch an average of four hours’ TV a day.

People watching for three and a half hours were 15% more likely to die of the illnesses studied than those who watched for less than an hour.

Other conditions looked at were chronic lung diseases, influenza/pneumonia, heart diseaseand diabetes.

Suicide rates were also higher among those watching more TV.

Lead investigator Dr Sarah Keadle, of the National Cancer Institute in Michigan, USA, said: “We think TV viewing is an indicator of overall inactivity.

“Our results indicate too much sitting can have many adverse health effects. Although exercise did not fully eliminate the risks, it should be the first choice.”

The study looked at 221,000 people aged from 50 to 71.

The risk remained even after allowing for unhealthy eating, smoking and drinking.

But it did not identify if the same applied to driving, sitting at work or other sedentary leisure activities.

Dr Ann Hoskins, of Public Health England, said: “It’s never too late to get more active. Keep sitting time to a minimum.”
