2 Nigerian men arrested for duping a Bombay High Court Secretary in India

Two Nigerian men who duped the secretary of a serving Bombay High Court judge of Rs 2.2 lakh by befriending her on Facebook and eventually threatening her with ‘a judicial enquiry’, after she refused to make more payment were arrested by the cyber police station from New Delhi, India on Friday, April 22.

The Nigerian men identified as Casmir Chijioke and Oliver Onyeka befriended the woman with one of them pretending to be a UK national. According to the BKC cyber police, the complainant, who approached them on April 6, told them that a few months ago, she received a friend request on Facebook from a British national. She accepted the request and the two started chatting online, said an officer.

The man claimed to be from a well-to-do family and the duo started chatting frequently. Over a period of time, they became good friends and would chat almost daily, an officer said. One day, the man claimed to have been admitted to a hospital due to an ailment. The victim was very upset over this and communicated this to him. He then told her he was sending her a gift from the UK, as he himself could not come to India due to the ailment, an officer said.

image

A few days after this conversation, the woman received a call from the ‘Delhi customs’, stating there was a gift being parceled to her place and she would need to pay some ‘handling fee’. An officer disclosed that she paid the amount but over the next few weeks, she kept receiving demands for more money under various pretexts to ‘facilitate the transportation of the gift’. She then became suspicious and refused to pay the ‘customs official’ anymore.

“At this point, the callers, who knew she worked as a secretary to a judge, threatened her that if she did not make the payment, they would approach the judiciary and a ‘judicial enquiry’ would be initiated against her,” the officer said.

She quickly made another payment out of fear before approaching the cyber police station on April 6,’ A team led by inspector Ravi Sardesai began probe in the matter and based on technical intelligence, found that the “British” national was actually chatting from New Delhi. A team from the BKC cyber police station camped in Delhi for a few days before they managed to arrest Casmir Chitioke and Oliver Onyeka.

DCP (cyber) C S Rajkumar said,

“The duo was produced before a court in Delhi and granted a transit remand to be brought to the city.” An officer said that there is a possibility the two suspects have cheated more people using the same modus operandi. “Once we check the laptop of the accused, we will be able to find out if they targeted more victims,” he said.

This man walks away from his marriage after 20 years leaving everything he had for his wife

A man has recounted how he endured marriage for so many years and finally freed himself after waiting for all his kids grow up and leave home. He also left his properties and cash for his wife who he said he had second thoughts about almost immediately after they got married. I only wonder why he had second thoughts about the marriage and why he still went ahead with it and mind you he impregnated his so called wife or now ex wife more than once. Read what he wrote below…

image

“I was having second thoughts about the marriage almost immediately. I was thinking about asking for an annulment, but then we got pregnant. So I stuck it out for 20 years.

I did really well for myself during that time. I was making $100,000 per year as a lawyer. That was a lot of money in the sixties. We lived on the finest street in Charlotte. But I was still miserable. So the moment the kids were grown, I took off. I left my wife everything. I left her the house, the bank account, the Mercedes, everything. I didn’t even say goodbye. I just dictated a note to my secretary, called the Rolls Royce dealership, and told them to pick up the car at the airport.  I flew to New York with nothing but $800, screaming: Free at last, free at last, free at last!”

Four killed as Benue vigilance group bandits clash

Tension is building up in the Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State, where four persons believed to be natives of Okpoga and Ingle have been killed in a clash between a gang of suspected armed robbers and members of the vigilance group in the area.

It was gathered that trouble started when the leader of the gang which had been terrorising Okpoga was arrested and detained at the police headquarters in Makurdi.

The bandits were reported to have accused the vigilance group of reporting their leader to the police.

It was learnt that members of the gang killed a member of the vigilance group, thereby sparking off counter-offensive from the vigilante group, which allegedly killed one of the hoodlums.

On discovering that the deceased member of the vigilance group was a native of a nearby village called Ingle in Edumoga district, the people of the area were said to have attacked a commercial motorcyclist from Okpoga in Ingle

.

In all, four persons were killed between Monday and Wednesday at the boundary between Okpoga, headquarters of Okpokwu LGA, and Ingle, a nearby village from Okpoga.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Benue State Police Command, Moses Yamu, said four persons were killed in the area during the clashes.

Yamu added that six police patrol teams had been dispatched to the area to forestall further breakdown of law and order.

Yamu said the area commander in Otukpo had been directed by the police commissioner to ensure that peace returned to the area.

He called on those fleeing their homes to return, saying the police had brought he situation under control.

Meanwhile, the Idoma socio-cultural group, the Opiatoha K’Idoma, has condemned the spate of killings going on in Okpokwu, expressing worry that peace was gradually eluding the once quite area with some hoodlums turning the place into a theatre of war.

In a statement by its President and Secretary-General, Chief Baba Odangla and Chief Adoka Adaji, Opiatoha K’Idoma urged security agencies to fish out those behind the mayhem as a matter of urgency.

“There must be a stop to this anti-Idoma behaviour, hence the culprits should not be provided shelter by any group. We admonish our communities to live in peace with one another and eschew bitterness, the carnage in Agatu is still fresh in our memories to witness any form of violence in any part of Idoma land,” the group said.

Mikel Obi is the new captain of the Nigerian Super Eagles

Chelsea star Mikel Obi is the new Nigeria captain after Ahmed Musa relinquished the position on Thursday, saying this was to clear “a mix-up”.

“Something happened before I was made the captain of the Super Eagles. There was a mix-up,” Musa told reporters in Abuja.

“But right now, we have a new administration. Mikel is my senior and a big brother. So, Mikel is the captain, not me.”

Mikel described Musa as a “wonderful professional”, commending his courage to surrender the captaincy to him.

image

“I want to thank Ahmed Musa for being a wonderful professional,” he said.

“It takes a man to come out and do what Ahmed Musa has done today. So, I commend him a lot for doing that.”

Mikel will now lead Nigeria in Friday’s crucial 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt in the northern city of Kaduna.

image

Last year, CSKA Moscow forward Musa was named the country’s skipper by former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh, instead of vice-captain Mikel following the retirement of Vincent Enyeama from international football.

The 28-year-old Mikel made his full international debut in 2005, five years before 23-year-old Musa.

A robber was beaten up and stripped naked after caught trying to rob a woman at the ATM

  • Thief caught at South Africa
  • He was trying to rob a woman at the ATM

A 31-year-old man has been hospitalized after he was brutally beaten by a mob for allegedly attempting to rob a woman at an ATM in Giyani, Limpopo, South Africa.

According to local reports, the woman screamed, attracting the attention of people around. The mob gathered around the man, stripped him naked, paraded him in town and beat him so severely that he had to be taken to Nkhensani Hospital in an ambulance.

Giyani police spokesperson, Insp. Thomas Makhuvele, said the police arrived to intervene.
“The man is recovering in hospital and is not dead or in critical condition, as it is rumoured.”
At the time of his hospitalisation, the man was unconscious. He later on opened a case of assault against the mob, according to Makhuvhele.

thief sa

The woman who claimed to have been robbed by the man has not yet come forward to press any charge of theft. Rumours of a gang from Nkowankowa, (outside Tzaneen) operating in Giyani have been circulating around Giyani.
The group is said to travel in a white VW Citi Golf which operates as their escape car. The group loiters around ATMs and look for victims who look like they may need assistance.

However, according to Makhuvele, since no one has come forward with any information or pressed any charges, the man could walk off free.

“As no one has pressed any criminal charges against the man, he is currently not under police guard.” Makhuvele said.

The community is requested not to take matters into their own hands, but advised to rather go to the Giyani Police Station to give the police any information that could lead to criminal activity being curbed.

The police are investigating the matter and looking for the people responsible for the vicious assault of the man.

See what happens to two Nigerian men in India after scolding a child for being naughty

  • Two Nigerian men assaulted in India for scolding a child for throwing a water-filled ballon at one of them
  • Both men are now seeking justice for the incident and are scared for their lives

Two Nigerians were brutally beaten with cricket and baseball bats by a group of 12 men after one of them scolded a boy for hurling a water-filled balloon at him in New Delhi on Sunday, March 20, local media reports.

The victims, Evwrirhe Isaac, a football coach with a soccer club in Gulmohar Bagh, and his roommate, Abdul are yet to return to their house in Dwaka Mor since the incident because they have been receiving threatening calls.

“We are so scared… we are staying in my friend’s home and planning to leave this area. But we will fight and will try to get justice,” said Isaac.

Most of the residents told police they were not at home at the time of the attack, others claimed they knew nothing about it,

“We have registered a case under several appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code at Uttam Nagar police station and efforts are on to nab the accused,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Pushpendra Kumar told the newspaper.

Isaac said he was on his way to the market when a boy hurled a water-filled balloon at him. This angered Isaac and he caught hold of the boy and scolded him. He left the boy with a shopkeeper. Once he left, the boy’s brother arrived at the shop and the shopkeepers told him what happened.

“Within minutes, some people knocked on my door and began shouting. They then barged inside, ransacked my home and assaulted me and my roommate Aliyu Abdul,” said Isaac.

“They were hitting me… I pleaded with them to spare my life. I somehow managed to free myself and ran towards the balcony. They chased me and pushed me from the second floor of the building,” he added.

Speaking of the incident, his roommate Abdul said, “I kept telling them that I was not with Isaac during the incident, but they did not stop.”

Isaac claimed police registered a case only after senior officers intervened. “I went to the police station and requested them to help me out, but they refused to help, saying there was a strike going on in a government hospital, so they could not take me anywhere,” he added.

Isaac, who have been in India for eight years and has played for leading football clubs, said:

“I have been living in Dwarka for three years in a rented accomodation. I am used to people passing racist remarks, I have always ignored them. But what happened with us on Sunday was something beyond racism. We were beaten up so badly—we could have been killed.”

Beaded rapist gets four life sentences

Serial rapist Sipho Mbokazi, known as the ‘beaded penis rapist’ was sentenced to four life terms in jail plus an additional 213 years.

He was sentenced in the high court in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Mbokazi, 37, wore beads on his private parts when he raped his victims. He attacked most of his victims in their homes in Soshanguve. He wore a balaclava and held a gun or knife at the victim’s throat.

One woman was raped in front of her six-year old son.
His crime streak lasted for two years before he was eventually arrested in April 2013.

He attacked some of his victims on more than one occasion.

Two of his victims, who were present at the sentencing are mother and daughter. The two wept as the sentencing was read out.

Pretoria News reported, Judge Kollapen told each victim that they were brave women to have faced their rapist in court.

The judge told the victims that what happened to them was not their fault and that justice had been served.

“I have little doubt that the consequences of what happened will stay with you for a long time. Some of you will overcome the effects with time; for others it may last for ever, but the fact that you came to court to testify showed that you will not allow what had happened to defeat you.”

Mbokazi maintains his innocence.

He was linked to the rapes by DNA, as well as the beads he wore on his penis.

He has since removed the beads.

He said that the beads were a common thing among men, and it does not prove that he is a rapist.

All the victims identified him, saying that they recognised his eyes.

Dasuki refused to be brought to court EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission told Justice Baba Yusuf of a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, on Wednesday that the immediate past National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), refused to be brought to court for his trial.

The EFCC is prosecuting Dasuki and his co-accused person – a former Director of Finance and Administration in the NSA office, Shuaibu Salisu, and  a former General Manager, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Aminu Babakusa – on 19 counts of diversion of N32bn meant for arms procurement.

Two companies – Acacia Holdings Limited and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited – belonging to Babakusa, are also defendants in the case.

Justice Yusuf had on February 8, after dismissing the application by Dasuki, seeking an order prohibiting the EFCC from further prosecuting him on account of his continued detention, had fixed Wednesday for the trial to begin.

On Wednesday, however, Dasuki, who had since December 29, 2015, remained in the custody of the Department of State Services, was not produced in court.

His two lead counsel, Messrs Joseph Daudu (SAN) and Ahmed Raji (SAN), were also absent from the court.

But lead prosecuting counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), informed the judge that Dasuki refused to be brought to court because the senior lawyers, defending him, would not be present in court on Wednesday.

Jacobs said, “The first defendant said he would not be in court unless he is abducted because his lead counsel, J. B Daudu and Ahmed Raji, are not going to be in court.”

Jacobs said Daudu had informed him of an application for stay of proceedings of the trial which was filed before the Court of Appeal on behalf of the former NSA.

He maintained that the law never stopped an accused person in detention from facing trial.

He also alleged that Dasuki’s lawyers had deliberately refused to visit their client in the DSS custody so that they could continue to use the excuse of lack of access to him (Dasuki) as an excuse to frustrate the case.

Jacobs added, “When a defendant is in custody, the counsel should be allowed access to the defendant.

“I asked the DSS whether the lawyers ever made attempt to see him, they said they never did. It is a deliberate plan to frustrate the trial.”

Counsel who represented Dasuki in court on Wednesday, Mr. Wale Balogun, however debunked the allegation that his client refused to be brought to court.

He said, “Concerning the allegation, the defence lawyer is not aware of it. The defendant is not in court; he has not been produced. It is the requirement of the law that he should be here. The prosecution has not applied for the accused to be excused from court.

“The DSS official should have deposed to an affidavit to that effect.”

The other defence lawyers, including Mr. Solomon Umoh (SAN), said the matter could not proceed due to Dasuki’s absence.

Justice Yusuf adjourned the case till April 6.

Another judge of the FCT High Court in Maitama, Abuja, Justice Peter Affen, before whom  Dasuki and others are being prosecuted for alleged diversion of N19bn arms fund, had fixed April 20 and 22 for trial.

Justice Affen fixed the date for trial after dismissing another application by Dasuki to stop his trial on account of his continued detention.

Dasuki’s co-accused persons with respect to the case include a former Director of Finance and Administration in the Office of the NSA, Shuaibu Salisu, and a former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda.

University professor strips naked in refusal to be sacked

Ahn, ahn, what manner of behavior is this.. A controversial Ugandan professor Dr. Stella Nyanzi of University of Makerere who is famous for her threats and antics during Uganda’s general election, stripped naked to protest the decision by Makerere Institute of Social Research to vacate her from the office to make space for a new program. She accused the director Mahmood Mamdani of being a dictator.

image

“Mahmood Mamdani locked me out of my office, even after the Deputy Vice Chancellor refused him to continue with evicting me. I have found his ugly padlock barring my access to my office. This is the third day”  she wrote on her Facebook page.

She then threatened to strip naked in three hours if her office was still under lock. She eventually made good on the threat and posted a video of her nude protest. She also took nude nude photos and posted them along with verbal threats.

image

“I have thrown my clothes outside Mamdani’s office. I am naked as I cry out for my office,” she wrote.

Facebook deleted her account but later reinstated it. Mamdani eventually budged and allowed Dr. Nyanzi access to her office.

South African students protest topless against rape in their school and calls for justice

Protests began on Monday at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa against incessant rape on the campus. Topless female students with ‘this is mine scrawled on their breasts’ were seen among the protesters demonstrating against the rape culture on a university campus. The police have tried to disperse students using pepper spray and stun guns.
The students started demonstrating after a list of suspected rapists on campus was leaked on social media on Sunday.

image

Many students, who were raped on campus said they have reported rapes to the university as well as police, but that their complaints have been ignored by campus authorities, the BBC reported.

Students are demanding the university suspend 11 alleged rapists on campus who were listed on the leaked list on social media and change its policies on how rape victims are treated.

On Tuesday afternoon female students danced topless with some writing ‘this is mine’ on their breasts to show only they can decide to do with their bodies.

image

On Wednesday, more than 200 students were attacked with rubber bullets and pepper spray and stun grenades by police officers who were trying to disperse the crowd even after the vice chancellor of the University had begged the police to stop attacking his students.
Eastern Cape police arrested five students during the protest . They were later released without bail and are due to re-appear on charges of public violence in July.

According to Naledi Mashishi of the Students Representative Council, five students were arrested and one hospitalised after police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets at them.

Members of  the Students Representative Council said they will only stop if they are assured “no protester will face disciplinary action or be  penalised for participating in the protests”.
University lecturers have also joined in the demonstration.

image

National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union told Eyewitness News : “We decided to join the strike of the students because of the brutality of the police.

“We can’t watch our children being treated the way they were yesterday; so we took a decision that it’s too much now.”

The protests are now being wound down as university staff agree to set up a task force to research the allegations.

Lectures are due to resume nextbMonday.

According to statistics released, South Africa has the highest number of rapes in the world.

2 kids frantically text the police in fear as their father drives while drunk

You can bet these children had fear for their lives and certainly didn’t want to die. Two children from Nebraska, 14 year old  Mackenzie and her 12 year old brother Ethan Behrens were on a road trip from Kearney to Colorado with their father, 44-year-old Jason Behrens, who appeared to be drunk. The children began texting 911 asking for help. They texted 911 to send a cop to stop their father from allegedly driving drunk in a rental car on March 25 and putting their lives at risk.

Mackenzie told NTV News:

“We told him many times, we don’t want to go anymore because you are really drunk and I don’t want to die,”

Allegedly ignoring his children’s pleas for him to stop the car, their dad kept driving on what would be a seven-hour drive, swerving as he drove.

image

“The next time he swerves, send the text,” Ethan said he told his sister.

“And he swerved again so I pushed send,” she added.

The children kept texting with a 911 operator, describing businesses they passed by so that police could find them.

The kids  were able to convince their dad to stop at a Burger King so they could eat – unbeknownst to him, the Police were already on their way to catch up with them.

When Police finally caught up to the family, they had Behrens take a breathalyzer test. His blood alcohol content was 0.224%, which was nearly three times the legal limit, police said.

image

He was arrested and charged with DUI, his second offense, and two counts of driving under the influence with a passenger under 16, officials said.

Their Mum is now fighting to get full custody of the kids. She said the kids don’t want to be around their father anymore.

He is due court for his arraignment on April 27.

Sinking Brazils Rousseff seeks foreign help

Beleaguered Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff will travel to New York in a bid to rally international support against her impeachment, leaving behind a Cabinet paralysed by political crisis as another minister defected on Wednesday.

Rousseff aides said the leftist leader will attend a United Nations event on Friday in New York where she will denounce as illegal the attempt to impeach her, a process that could see her forced from office within weeks in a process she calls a “coup d’état without weapons.”

Energy Minister Eduardo Braga said he was quitting her government following orders from his centrist PMDB party, Rousseff’s main coalition partner until it abandoned her last month to back her ouster. Rousseff’s impeachment would end 13 years of rule by the leftist Workers Party.

Nine ministers in Rousseff’s 31-member cabinet have now resigned, leaving important portfolios without politically appointed heads, including the Tourism and Sports ministries only four months before Brazil hosts the Olympic Games. Rousseff may not even be president by the time the Games start.

Vice President Michel Temer, who would take over if Rousseff is impeached, met with close advisors in Sao Paulo to study plans for a new government that, aides said, would move quickly to restore economic confidence and growth.

The crisis has paralysed Brazil’s ability to revive the economy from its worst recession in decades in the midst of a massive corruption scandal involving state-run oil firm Petrobras .

Murilo Portugal, the head of Brazil’s most powerful banking industry lobby, has emerged as a strong candidate to become finance minister if Temer takes power, a source familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

Rousseff lost a crucial vote in the lower house of Congress on Sunday and now faces impeachment by the Senate on charges of breaking budget laws.

With the prospect of the Senate suspending her in three weeks, Rousseff cancelled her trip to attend the signing of the Paris Agreement on climate change on Friday to focus on her political survival.

India jails Nigerian 4 years for stabbing Nigerian over girlfriend

An Indian  court  in Panaji, Goa,  has sentenced a Nigerian  to four years in jail on charges of stabbing to death another Nigerian  at Verla—Bardez.

The Nigerian Michael Nzube committed the offence in 2012 after accusing the victim, Chukwuebuka Henry  of chasing his girlfriend.

The court noted that the offence of the accused was that of culpable homicide not amounting to murder because evidence proved that while the accused caused the death of  Henry, there was no intention to cause death in the sudden fight.

In his ruling, additional sessions judge, Mapusa, Desmond D’Costa said, based on the facts and circumstances of the case, a four- year simple imprisonment would be justice enough “as this is the first conviction of the accused and the incident took place due to a dispute over the friendship of the deceased with the girlfriend of the accused”.

The court also fined the accused 10,000 rupees.

Michael Nzube was held guilty under section 304 (Part II) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on the basis an eyewitness statement. The witness, Michael Okafor, also a Nigerian, deposed that the accused had stabbed Henry in his flat at Verla with a knife.

The prosecution also proved that the blood found on the accused’s pants matched the deceased’s blood group.

At 2.30am on December 21, 2012, the accused, on suspicion, went to deceased’s flat and started searching for his girlfriend. The witness had accompanied the accused to the flat.

In an ensuing fight that broke out between the accused and the deceased, the witness was pushed into the bedroom by the duo. By the time he emerged from the bedroom, the victim had been stabbed.

The witness told the court that the victim told him that accused had stabbed him with a knife, and showed him the stab wounds on his stomach.
Public prosecutor A Talaulikar argued that the accused had not explained the injuries on the victim with whom he admitted that he had a fight on that night.
While convicting the accused, the judge observed, “On considering the oral and documentary evidence on record in the present case, I hold that based on the direct evidence of the eyewitness as well as circumstantial evidence, the prosecution has proved that the accused had stabbed Henry with a knife in his flat at Verla causing him bleeding injuries.”
The judge noted that there is the circumstantial evidence of the blood group, which linked the accused alone with the injuries that had been caused to the victim on that morning.

Three dead in explosion at Mexican oil plant

A massive explosion rocked a major petrochemical facility of Mexican national oil company Pemex in the Gulf state of Veracruz on Wednesday, killing three people, injuring dozens more, and pumping a cloud of noxious chemicals into the sky.
Luis Felipe Puente, head of federal emergency services, said that three people had died in the blast. The governor of Veracruz State, Javier Duarte, later said on his Twitter account that105 were hospitalized, including 58 Pemex workers.

Pemex said the explosion, which sent a huge, dark plume of smoke billowing upwards, occurred just after 10 pm (SAST) at the facility’s chlorinate 3 plant near the port of Coatzacoalcos, one of the company’s top oil export hubs.

Local emergency officials said hundreds of people had been evacuated from the site. A company official said local oil exports were unaffected. What caused the blast was unclear, but Pemex warned local residents to keep away from the site due to what it described as a dissipating cloud of toxic fumes.

Petroquimica Mexicana de Vinilo (PMV), a vinyl petrochemical plant that is a joint venture between Pemex’s petrochemical unit and Mexican plastic pipe maker Mexichem was the facility hit by the blast. Operated by Mexichem, the plant lies within Pemex’s larger Pajaritos petrochemical complex.

Mexico is in the midst of a historic push to lure private investors to revive its oil industry. Pemex, which enjoyed a decades-long monopoly over Mexico’s oil and gas industry until an energy reform opened up the sector in 2014, has experienced a series of high-profile accidents.

In 2013, at least 37 people were killed by a blast at its Mexico City headquarters, and 26 people died in a fire at a Pemex natural gas facility in northern Mexico in September 2012.

In February, a fire killed a worker at the PMV plant, which makes vinyl chloride monomer, also known as chloromethane, an industrial chemical used to produce plastic piping.

The incident occurred just weeks after three workers were killed and seven injured when a fire broke out on a Pemex oil-processing platform in the Gulf of Mexico. It also came as Pemex implements deep cost cuts to cope with the rout in oil prices, and seeks to stem a slide in output.

Umar orders police to throw out Sarakis lawyer(Video)

There was mild drama at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) on Thursday, as the CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar, refused to hear the motion filed by counsel of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on his (Umar) alleged bias.

Umar dismissed the application asking him to disqualify himself from the case. “That motion as far as the tribunal is concerned is of no consequence; not worthy to be entertained and is hereby thrown away,” said Mr. Umar.

Mr. Raphael Oluyede, Saraki’s lawyer, brought to the attention of the court, a motion filed on Wednesday, April 20th, 2016, seeking the CCT boss to disqualify himself from participating in the trial based on bias.

The motion contended that the continued presence of Umar on the panel of Tribunal offended the provisions of Section 36(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which prescribes that “In the determination of his civil rights and obligations, including any question or determination by or against any government or authority, a person shall be entitled to a fair hearing within a reasonable time by a court or other tribunal established by law and constituted in such manner as to secure its independence and impartiality”.

However, when Oluyede attempted to bring up the motion, Justice Umar repeatedly yelled at him to “Sit down.” After Oluyede demanded to be heard, Umar, upset by the revelations, called for police officers to throw out the counsel to the Senate President. However, Oluyede sat down on arrival of the police officers and maintained that he would not be intimidated However, prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, intervened and pleaded with Mr. Danladi to calm the situation.

I stole from banks because the operatives were careless Robbery suspect

A 34-year-old suspect, Ibrahim Abudulamdi, paraded, yesterday, by the Lagos State Police Command, said he is not a robber, but goes to bank to steal after studying the environment.

“I am not a robber, I go into banks to steal, not to rob.

When I get there I pretend that I want to lodge some money. For instance, when I went into FCMB to withdraw money, I went straight to the bulk room after monitoring the environment carefully, I saw some money and I collected it.

“I collected N1.2 million, it was this year that I went there. I didn’t go there with a pistol. I succeeded in stealing from the bank because the bank operatives were careless. I went into the bulk room and picked the money, I am not a robber.

There was nobody there, I am telling you exactly what happened. But, it was gathered that Ibrahim went to the bank with a Ghana-must-go bag pretending he wanted to deposit money.

Later he allegedly took a gun from the bag and attacked the cashier.   Demonstrating how he usually swapped his polythene bag containing cut-to-size papers with the victim’s own containing money while pretending to be asking the cashier questions, Ibrahim said he used different methods for different operations. “Sometimes, I simply swap the victim’s bag containing money with a similar one containing cut-to-size papers.

Gunmen invade five Lagos communities displace residents

There is tension in Oko Olomi, Olowu, Adeba, Itapanpa and Ijegi communities in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State after gunmen invaded the areas.

Source learnt that the gunmen came in at about 7am on Sunday and shot sporadically during which seven persons were injured.

Our correspondent gathered that the hoodlums, said to be about 50, told residents to leave their houses as the land in the communities had been bought by a company.

It was learnt that the gunmen, who came with an excavator, also destroyed the fences of people’s houses.

PUNCH Metro was told that the gunmen came with six policemen from the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, and were allegedly led by a man, identified simply as Owoeye.

It was gathered that the matter was reported at the Elemoro Police Division, and policemen at the state command took the Zone 2 policemen to the station for an enquiry.

The Baale of Oko Olomi Community, Chief Lateef Odofin, said the injured residents had been taken to a hospital for treatment.

He added that the Divisional Police Officer of the Elemoro division also came to the area on Monday and assessed the damage done by the hoodlums.

He said, “The gunmen came in the morning. Later around 12am on Monday, they came back and their gunshots rent the air. No one could sleep in any of the communities. Six policemen came with them from the Zone 2 Command.

“I was the one who reported the matter at the Elemoro division when the gunshots started in the morning. No one can move into the community as of now.

“We have six persons currently in the hospital after the invasion. There is panic everywhere. Some people have moved out of their houses. They are afraid to return because the hoodlums came again on Monday.

“The Elemoro DPO came on Monday to assess the damage caused by the invaders and he also took photographs. The policemen the hoodlums hired from Zone 2 Command said Owoeye had told them that some trespassers had built structures on his land.”

A landlord in Olowu community, who gave his name only as Soleye, said, “When the gun-wielding invaders started to demolish the fences, we challenged them, but they said a company had bought the land being occupied by the five communities.

“When we checked the documents they brought, we found out that the said company had already demarcated its own land.

“When they saw they were going to be exposed, they began to shoot to scare residents. When the policemen left, the hoodlums continued shooting till 11pm. There was no electricity, but the hoodlums brought torches. Nobody could sleep at home. The government should stop the activities of land grabbers in the Ibeju-Lekki area.”

Two of the injured residents are identified as Rasak, aka Olori Ebi, and Idowu.

When PUNCH Metro contacted Owoeye, he denied sending hoodlums to the communities. Owoeye said he sent workers, who acted on a court order which gave the land to a company.

He added that some residents of the communities sent hoodlums to attack the workers.

He said, “I did not send hoodlums to shoot anyone. The land does not belong to the communities. The company had bought the land from their fathers. I took my excavator there with my workers to clear the area.

“When I got there, thugs from the community pursued policemen with guns. They also injured my workers.”

Showing our correspondent a copy of the order, Owoeye added that a company, Toll System Development Co. Ltd, had been awarded possession of 1,561.20 hectares of land situated at Lakowe village, in the Ibeju Lekki area.

The court order reads partly, “In the result, it is hereby ordered that the claimant herein do recover possession of land measuring 1,561.20 hectares covered by a Certificate of Occupancy registered as no 17 page 17 in Vol. 2003T situated at Lakowe village, Ibeju Lekki, from any person who occupies same without the consent or permission of the claimant.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said, “I learnt the policemen are from Zone 2. Please talk to the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer.”

The Zonal PPRO, CSP Adebowale Lawal, said he could not yet verify the incident, promising to get back to our correspondent.

He, however, had yet to get back as of press time.

But the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, on Wednesday said the police had made some arrests and recovered four pump-action rifles.

He said, “It has been observed that recently, suspected land grabbers are disturbing Lagos residents and the areas notorious for this are the Lekki-Epe and Ikorodu areas.

“We remind the people engaging in this criminal act that the police will not fold their arms and allow them to unleash terror on people who had legitimately acquired landed property in the state.”

SA ranked the third most dangerous country in the world

Four of South Africa major cities rank in the top 10 most dangerous cities in the world, but for the first time, Cape Town’s not even in the top five.

The Rand Daily Mail reports that according to an index by Numbeo, one of the world’s largest databases of user-contributed data focusing on cities and countries; corruption and bribery are South Africa’s two major crime problems.

The index puts south africa way up there on the list, behind Venezuela and South Sudan – governed by none other than Zuma’s bestie, Omar al-Bashir – and ranks Pietermaritzburg as the second most dangerous city in the world behind Pedro Sula in Honduras.

Now, it’s important to note that the Numbeo index relies on user-contributions, so there are are areas – like most of Africa – where there is no ranking due to a lack of contributors.

Those who took part of the survey were asked to score the level of crime in their country and city from bad (-2) to good (+2). It looked at people’s levels of fear about violent crime‚ theft‚ hate crimes based on ethnicity or religion‚ and corruption and bribery.

According to the index, corruption and bribery clocked in as the largest crime group in SA, with assault and robbery, and theft following. Racism is ranked as the ‘least worrying’ group.

Of the 10 most dangerous cities, Jozi comes in fourth, Tshwane fifth and Durban sixth with Cape Town – which is ranked as the ninth most violent city in the world – coming in at number 20 on the Numbeo scorecard.

Numbeo’s indices rely on user inputs as well as data manually collected information from a number of authoritative sources‚ with algorithms in place to discard statistically inaccurate data. They claim to have millions of ‘datapoints’ globally and media groups like Forbes, Business Insider, Time, The Economist and the New York Timesoften use them as a comparative data source.

EFCC arrests suspended DG others for N2.5bn fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested the suspended Director-General, of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate, Nelly Mayshak, and three others, Yoab Youssoufou, Patricia Iyogun, and Ruth Imonikhe for a N2.5bn fraud.

PTAD is an independent pension agency established in August 2013 to oversee the management of pensions under the Defined Benefit Scheme for pensioners not transiting to the defined contributory scheme.

It will be recalled that Mayshak was last month placed on an indefinite suspension and investigated after it was discovered that she allegedly received N50m monthly in salary and allowances.

According to sources at the EFCC, investigations into the alleged fraud revealed that Mayshak allegedly misappropriated about N2bn that was left in the pensions’ account of the Head of the Civil Service, Nigeria Immigrations Service, Nigeria Customs Service, and Nigeria Prisons Service.

She also allegedly embezzled about N500m meant as the take-off grant for PTAD.

The alleged scam, which borders on procurement fraud, was committed during her three-year tenure.

A detective at the anti-graft agency told our correspondent that Mayshak allegedly awarded several fictitious contracts to her cronies at PTAD, one of whom was her sister-in-law.

A source at the EFCC said, “In one instance, Mayshak allegedly approved N25,410,000 for the supply of 121,000,000 litres of fuel in one day when in fact there was no corresponding storage capacity, as PTAD only has a storage capacity of about 11,000 litres, which lasts for about a month.

“Mayshak is alleged to have awarded several phony contracts to cronies and members of staff of PTAD, through which she used to enrich herself as they only served as fronts for her.

“Between December 8 and 30, 2014 she awarded multiple contracts to one company , Interactive Wide Nigeria Limited  to the tune of N29,377,993.26. Contracts for the supply of office materials, air conditioners, and conference materials to the tune of N375, 704,287 were awarded to Belzacode, Hosley Nigeria Limited, and Pabak Nigeria Limited.”

Investigations revealed that one of the suspects, Yousoufou, who is the Team Leader, ICT Department, owned Belzacode; while Imonihke, Team Leader, DG’s Office, owned Hosley Nigeria Limited. Iyogun, who is Team Leader, Customs, Immigration, Prisons, Pensions Department, and also a sister-in-law to Mayshak, owned Pabak Nigeria Limited.

The anti-graft agency, however, said the three suspects were merely fronts for the prime suspect, Mayshak.

The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

The latest arrest of Mayshak is one of many pension scams in recent times.

Last year the EFCC declared wanted Mr. Abdulrsheed Maina, a former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, for his role in the fraudulent biometric contracts through which he and a former Head of Service, Steve Oronsaye, and two others allegedly stole over N2bn of pension funds.

The International Police Organisation has already issued a ‘Red Notice’ on Maina, who is believed to have fled to Dubai.

Attempts to get comments from the spokesperson for PTAD, Mrs. Theodora Amechi ,were not successful as calls made to her mobile line did not connect.

Similarly a text message sent to her phone had yet to be responded to as of 7.56pm on Tuesday night.

We cant meter one million customers yearly Discos

Electricity distribution companies have said the deadline given to them by the Federal Government to meter one million electricity consumers annually is not realistic.

According to the Discos, the cap on their capital expenditure is a major challenge to meeting the deadline.

The chief executive officers of the 11 Discos stated this during an interactive session with the Acting Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Dr. Vincent Akpotaire, at the bureau’s office in Abuja.

The bureau, in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Head, Public Communications, Mr. Alex Okoh, stated that the meeting also had heads of power generation companies in attendance.

Speaking on behalf of the successor power companies, the Managing Director, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, Mr. John Donnachie, said the Discos and Gencos had benefited from efforts of the government in the sector through the National Integrated Power Project, the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s N213bn intervention fund.

Donnachie, however, called for additional intervention through the bureau to secure more investment from the Federal Government by financing the 40 per cent equity held in trust by the BPE for the government.

On the implementation of a cost-reflective tariff, he said it was a step in the right direction but that the deadline by the Federal Government to the Discos to meter one million customers within a year was not realistic.

He explained that the cap on the Discos’ capital expenditure was a hindrance to meeting the deadline.

The IBEDC boss stated that metering was a capital-intensive venture and a key component in implementing the new tariff.

In his address, the BPE DG said that continuous interactions as well as the commitment of the power operators and the political will of the Federal Government were critical to resolving the challenges in the sector.

Akpotaire called for enhanced synergy between the successor companies of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria and the bureau to boost efforts towards actualising the full objectives of the power sector privatisation.

NFF names Amodu as Super Eagles interim coach

The National Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Association, Shaibu Amodu, will lead quartet of Salisu Ibrahim, Alloy Agu, Emma Amakapabo and Kennedy Boboye to serve as the Super Eagles temporal consortium of technical crew to handle the team for the two international friendly encounters against Mali and Luxembourg in Europe.

The Nigeria Football Federation technical Sub-committee made the recommendation to the Executive Committee of the Federation after several hours of deliberation.

The technical committee argued that they went for Amakapabo and Boboye, two league coaches, meritoriously to expose them to the rudiments of the game with those two matches.
While Amakapabo coaches Rangers FC, Boboye is at the helm of affairs at Abia Warriors.
A member of the committee noted that while Amodu would supervise and oversee the other coaches, Agu would remain as the goalkeeper trainer, arguing that the decision to drop both Samson Siasia and Emmanuel Amunike from the technical crew has nothing to do with their technical input during the Eagles clash with the Pharaohs of Egypt.
A source said: “Part of the recommendations we gave to the Executive Committee of the federation is that Amodu will supervise the technical crew to be headed by the Salisu.
“We also recommended the drafting of two league coaches into the crew and we went for Rangers and Abia Warriors chief coaches, just as we settled for Agu as the goalkeeper trainer.
“We went for the two league coaches to expose them with those two matches. I know that Nigerians will ask why Siasia and Amunike did not continue with the team, but we all know that they are very much engaged and committed with their teams.
“Our plans and expectations will be to provide every help to Siasia to win the Olympic Games trophy. The appointment will be for the two friendly matches, after which we will continue with the hiring of a substantive coach for the team.”

Fulani herdsmen attack Oyo farmers

Farmers in Lagun, Iyana Offa, Offa, Atagba, Lapata and their surrounding communities in Lagelu Local Council Area of Ibadan, Oyo State, have alleged that a group of Fulani armed men attacked their communities at night, injured a guard and carted away valuables on Tuesday.

More than five farms and surrounding agrarian communities were allegedly visited in the attack, with eyewitnesses saying they also suspected that the attackers were Fulani herdsmen because of their mode of dressing.

Villagers, who spoke with our correspondent, said more than N500,000 was stolen by the attackers. They alleged that apart from money, clothes, shoes and foodstuffs that were taken, cooked food items were taken away by the attackers who had a field day roaming the places for more than seven hours. Various sources also put the number of the attackers at between 30 and 40.

Owner of one of the farms, Ayodele Adigun, called on the Federal Government to intervene in the frequent Fulani herdsmen attack on the communities lying on the border between Oyo and Osun states. He said unless urgent step was taken, the situation could degenerate into an ethnic clash.

A supervisor at the farm, Olaonipekun Ogunkolade, explained that the attackers stormed the farm around 8pm in a commando style, wielding guns and other dangerous weapons.

The supervisor said the attacker gathered the workers into groups and held them hostage while the operation lasted. He said they were thoroughly beaten and threatened with their weapons.

The injured guard was later found in the pool of his own blood after a headcount showed that he was missing. Another worker, simply identified as Haruna Usman, said he escaped death after he was shot by one of the attackers as he was returning to the farm.

Usman, who was coming from Jos in Plateau State, said, “The robber who chased me was speaking Fulani language to me. Later, he spoke Hausa, telling me to stop. He threatened me that he would shoot me if I didn’t stop.”

When the newsmen visited the injured guard, Jimi Aido, at the Iwo Medical Centre, Iwo, Osun State, the senior medical officer on duty, Mrs. Adeola Adelabu, said that the health condition of the victim was stable.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oyo State Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said he had yet to be briefed about the attack and that he would get back to our correspondent. Policemen on patrol in the Lagun community said they could not comment on the attack.

Couple found dead in apartment in Ondo

A  man, Mr. Femi Oguntunwase,  and his wife, Modupe, were found dead in their house in the new site area of Oba Ile town in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

A source in the town said the cause of the death of the couple had yet to be known, adding that their lifeless bodies were found on the floor of the sitting room of their apartment on Saturday.

The source said the husband was on the ground naked, while the wife was also on the floor in a T-shirt and a wrapper with a bottle of palm oil beside them.

A resident of the area, who identified himself only as Seluwa, said the couple was seen in the morning of the day, adding that neighbours were surprised to find them dead in the afternoon.

She said, “We saw the husband in the morning, but in the afternoon, they were found dead.”

She explained that a bowl of pap and some akara balls were seen beside the deceased, which showed that they died after taking their breakfast.

It was gathered that when the neighbours entered into the apartment, palm oil was inside the deceased’s mouths, which indicated that they might have eaten poison and drunk palm oil to suppress it.

“There was palm oil in their mouths. It may be when they were having stomach pain that they drank the palm oil. We also discovered that the death happened after their breakfast.”

When contacted on the telephone on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident, saying the remains of the deceased  had been deposited at the Ondo State Specialists Hospital, Akure, the state capital.

He said the command had not made any arrest on the incident because it had not been established that the couple were killed.

He said, “We got the report of the incident on Saturday and we are still investigating to get to the cause of the death. The bodies have been deposited at the hospital for autopsy; it is after the autopsy that we will know the next step to take.”

No new MTN talks until Reps probe ends Minister

Hope of an early resolution of the controversy surrounding the deadline for the payment of a $3.9bn fine slammed against MTN dimmed on Wednesday as the Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, said the planned new talks with the telecommunication firm would be delayed until after the probe by the House of Representatives.

Last month, the House of Representatives had launched a probe into whether Nigeria could reduce the fine, which originally amounted to $5.2bn.  The fine was for missing a deadline to disconnect unregistered SIM card users.

In December, telecoms regulator, the Nigerian Communication Commission had cut the fine to $3.9bn.

The probe has hindered efforts by MTN to launch new talks aimed at getting the fine reduced further.

A report by Reuters on Wednesday quoted Shittu as saying, “As soon as the ongoing (parliamentary) investigations are concluded, we will sit down with them (MTN).”

The House launched its investigation after MTN angered lawmakers by snubbing an invitation to its Nigeria’s Chief Executive Ferdi Moolman to appear at the telecoms committee, according to MPs.

MTN had offered in March to pay $1.5bn, according to a document seen by Reuters. And it dropped a legal case against the regulator as the first step in its efforts to reach an out of court settlement.

Last year, Nigeria imposed a deadline on mobile operators to cut off unregistered SIM cards, which MTN missed, amid fears the lines were being used by criminal gangs, including militant Islamist group Boko Haram.

Fire kills two in Oyo guts 50 shops at Ladipo market

At least two persons were confirmed dead in Okaka, in the Itesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State on Wednesday after a petrol tanker fell, spilling its content on the road and causing fire.

The incident happened one week after an auto accident claimed 14 lives in the Ipapo area of the council.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the truck fell into a drainage channel, adding that when the fire started, people living in the surrounding community fled the area.

Men of the state fire service, who arrived at the scene from Iseyin, had a hard time trying to put out the fire.

A car and several shops were completely burnt, while property was lost to the fire.

Many people, who were injured in the incident, were taken to a hospital.

One of the dead, Idowu Ganiyu, was said to be riding a commercial motorcycle and was trapped in the inferno.

He was said to have sustained burns and taken to a hospital, where the father of four was pronounced dead.

The other victim, Mrs. Adeola Adepoju, was said to have visited her daughter in the area when she was caught in the fire.

Meanwhile in Lagos, an early morning fire razed no fewer than 50 shops at the Ladipo spare parts market in the Mushin area of the state, consuming goods estimated at over a billion naira.

Although there are different accounts of what caused the fire, Source learnt that it started around 3am on Wednesday.

While some residents said the fire was caused by an electrical spark from high-tension wires near the shops, others said it began from a food seller’s shop who was preparing food at the time.

However, our correspondent gathered that a jerrycan of fuel stored in one of the shops aggravated the inferno.

A trader, Innocent Ogunna, who attributed the fire to an electrical spark, said cash sums were also destroyed.

He said, “There was a big spark from the high-tension cables which ignited a fire in the shops. That was how the fire started spreading and it then came in contact with petrol.

“People living on the street were the first to see it and they started calling us. Some of us, who kept money in our shops, couldn’t get anything back.”

A dealer in shock absorbers and headlights, Mr. Sunday Ani, explained that he was asleep with his family when he was called.

The father of three said he had only stocked his store with new goods on Tuesday.

He said, “The whole thing happened suddenly. As of yesterday (Tuesday), I bought new goods and I didn’t even estimate the value because I planned to do that today (Wednesday).

“I got here to discover that everything had been burnt. This is a terrible situation for me.”

Emmanuel Obi, another trader, said he was called around 3am when the fire started.

Obi, who had been trading in the market for more than nine years, said although he got to the scene shortly after he was called, he could only watch helplessly as his goods were razed by the fire.

“I lost goods of over a million naira. I could not get anything out except scraps,” he added.

Another trader, IK Obinna, who claimed to have been working in Ladipo market for over six years, said he had informed his master about the damage, adding that they had surrendered to fate.

Some youths, who were picking irons from the smouldering shops, were attacked by angry traders.

The Chairman of the Ladipo-Osoro Traders Union, Felix Okoro, commended the Lagos State Fire Service for curtailing the fire.

Okoro said it might take some time for the market to get back to its feet as goods lost were valued at over a billion naira.

He said, “More than 50 shops were affected. And in these shops, we deal in brand new spare parts, many of which come in cartons. We lost goods valued at over a billion naira. We are devastated by this. If not for the fire service, who responded promptly, the damage could have been more.”

He appealed to the government to come to the aid of the affected traders to enable them get back to business.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, in a text message, confirmed the incident, saying three fire trucks were deployed to the scene by the agency.

RITA DOMINIC HEART BROKEN AGAIN?

It seems Nollywood super diva, Rita Dominic is heartbroken again. This could be traced to her latest Instagram post where she talked about men who are confused about what they actually want in their lives.

The post has been made her comment section flooded with fans divided over if she was right or wrong.

Meanwhile, recall that sometime last year, the Imo State born actress told Blanck Magazine how she feels being in love; “Love is jumping when your partner’s favourite club scores a goa. I feel grateful, thankful and excited as well. Yes I am dating someone and I am in a happy place. I’m good”.

The actress however refused to disclose who it was that’s got her heart in Knots, but it seems the Imo State born diva might have been referring to; Femi Jacobs.

The two rumoured love birds were the lead casts in the ‘Meeting’ movie’.

“They are dating for real but still keeping it under wraps…they started as friends after the meeting movie and it became serious afterwards” the source claimed.
