Rights Group Condemns Army For Announcing Buhari’s Visit To Sambisa

MURIC

By Ogbolu George

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has taken a swipe at the Nigerian Army for badly managing information about President Muhammadu Buhari’s intended trip to Sambisa forest, Borno state.

The Army last week disclosed the proposed visit of the President to Sambisa forest, to declare open the 2017 Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship.

They group made its feeling known in a statement by its Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

”That publicity blitz on the president’s proposed visit to Sambisa was, to say the least, naive, infantile and ill-advised.

”While it is true that presidents of countries who dispatched soldiers to war zones usually visit such dangerous places as the commanders-in-chief of the army, such visits are usually clandestine for obvious reasons.

”This explains why US President Lincoln’s visit to Antietam on October 3, 1862 was unannounced. The same Lincoln was protected by more than 100 US soldiers when he paid another surprise visit to Richmond on April 4, 1865,” the group said.

MURIC then advised the military to keep in secret future movements of President Buhari and other senior government officials around Borno state.

NJC Didn’t Allow Us Question Judges Over Bribery, Says EFCC

By Ige Olugbenga

Daniel Danladi, a witness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday, told the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja that the National Judicial Council (NJC) last year prevented the commission from questioning some judges who were allegedly bribed by some lawyers.

Danladi said this at the resumed proceedings in the trial of a Senior Advocate Nigeria, Dr Joseph Nwobike, for alleged bribery before Justice Raliat Adebiyi.

He stated this while being cross-examined by Nwobike’s lawyer, Olawale Akoni (SAN).

According to him, though the EFCC had been on the case since March 2016, it was unable to summon and question the judges involved until October 2016.

This, he said, was because the NJC refused to hand the judges over to the anti-graft agency.

He added that when the judges were eventually questioned, they gave reasons why they got various sums of money from the lawyers.

Danladi, who is a detective with the Special Task Force of the EFCC, had earlier identified in the court through a displayed document entitled, “Extraction Report” on the screen in the courtroom in his evidence-in-chief,  the names of the four judges who were allegedly involved in the gratification scam.

They are Justice Mohammed Yinusa, Justice H.A. Ngajiwa and Justice Musa Kurya, all of the Federal High Court and Justice James Agbadu-Fishim of the National Industrial Court.

He said the report contained details of 14,317 text messages from Nwobike’s Samsung Galaxy Note 4 mobile phone, seized from him by the anti-graft agency during investigations of the alleged corruption case.

According to him, some of the text messages in the report contained details of bank transactions as well as messages allegedly sent by Nwobike to the judicial officers and judges.

During Tuesday’s proceedings, Danladi testified that one ‘Debbie Lady’exchanged text messages with the Nwobike  on several occasions.

When being cross-examined, Danladi told the court that Justice Ngajiwa explained that the N300,000 he got from Nwaobike was for the purchase of law books to update his library,

Justice Kurya claimed the N100,000 he received from the defendant was a gift after he was bereaved and for his medical treatment.

Danladi also added that Justice Agbadu-Fishim explained to the commission during questioning that the N150,000 he got from the defendant was a gift and he added that the defendant also corroborated what the judges had said when he was also questioned.

Austria To Ban Wearing Of Public Face Veils

By Oladapo Okeowo with agency reports

The first step in the ban, in Austria, of wearing full-face veils in public areas was taken on Tuesday as the cabinet presented amendments to the country’s integration laws.

This was disclosed by Sebastian Kurz, the minister of foreign and integration, to reporters after a cabinet meeting. He said the ban is expected to foster the integration of migrants.

So also, Salafist Muslim groups will no longer be allowed to hand out copies of the Koran in public. This is so as to curb rising cases of extremist views.

In addition, asylum seekers who have a high chance of being recognised as refugees will have to take part in community service and learn the German language.

This is the sickening moment a dead man was cut out of a seven-metre long python’s stomach after being swallowed whole. Akbar Salubiro, 25, went missing on Sunday night after setting off to harvest palm oil in a remote village on the island of west Sulawesi, Indonesia.

.

Concerned friends and relatives found a giant python sprawled out in Akbar’s own back garden the next evening – and feared he had been suffocated and swallowed.

Akbar’s lifeless body was found inside the serpent after horrified locals sliced open its belly using a 18-inch long hunting knife.

Horrifying footage shows the corpse being slowly removed from the killer reptile as the leathery skin is peeled away. Akbar’s wife, Munu, was away at the time and only found out when pictures and video emerged in the news, local media reported.

Village secretary Salubiro Junaidi said: ‘People had heard cries from the palm grove the night before Akbar was found in the snake’s stomach. When the snake was captured, the boots Akbar was wearing were clearly visible in the stomach of the snake.

Psychiatrists Push For Mental Health Law To Stem Rising Cases Of Suicide

By Victor Ernest

Lagos-based psychiatrists, Dr Moruf Mustapha and Dr Oluwadamilola Ajayi, have stated in a joint statement that passage of a mental health law would go a long way in addressing the huge burden of mental disorders and prevent suicides in the country.

Danger of depression

According to the doctors, one of the commonest mental disorders with significant unhealthful and widespread notoriety is depression.

They said depression is not profound sadness; it is not just an inability to cope with life experiences; it is not caused by a character or personality flaw; it is not a moral failing, neither is it a spiritual affliction.

The psychiatrists claim depression is an illness, a mental illness, that may end in mortality, possibly through suicide.

Mustapha and Ajayi said that the Nigerians had been expressing divergent views on the possible cause of the March 19 suicide committed by a medical doctor, Dr Allwell Orji, but talked little about the possibility of a mental disorder.

The doctors said that more than four-fifths of all suicides could be attributed to mental illness, with depression having a large proportion of the statistic.

Dearth of psychiatrists

The psychiatrists also decried dearth of psychiatrists in the country, noting that there are less than 500 practicing psychiatrists in Nigeria, which has a population of more than 180 million people.

This translates to a ratio of one psychiatrist to about 360,000 citizens.

”In the middle of this challenge, doctors, old and young, specialists and generalists, surgeons and physicians, are negotiating their way out of the country’s borders,” added the Nigerian psychiatrists.

EFCC Arraigns Businessman Over Obtaining N4.4m Under False Pretence

By Ige Olugbenga

An Enugu-based businessman was arraigned by the  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday for financial impropriety.

The man, named as Nicholas Emenike, was arraigned before Justice C.C. Ani of the State High Court, Enugu on a two-count charge of obtaining the sum of N4,467,500 under false pretences and issuance of a dud cheque to the tune of the same amount.

According to Daily Post, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.

After his not fuilty plea, his lawyer Enih G. prayed the court to grant his client bail on the ground that he was not only sick but had recently lost his wife.

The prosecution lawyer, Michael Ani opposed the bail application arguing that the accused had earlier jumped the administrative bail granted him.

Suspect lied

According to a petition brought before the commission on 16th August, 2015, the suspect lied to the complainant that his company Rosa Construction Company had been awarded a multi-million naira contract and needed him to supply iron rods worth N4.4 million to execute part of the contract on credit, pledging to pay up within a month.

However, after many months of non-payment of the said sum, coupled with an excuse that the contract had been cancelled by his client, the complainant then demanded the return of his items (iron rods) only to find out to his dismay that the accused person had sold them off.

Thereafter, all efforts to get back his money were to no avail only for Emenike to issue a Diamond bank cheque which when presented was returned unpaid due to insufficient funds.

Emenike, who was due for arraignment on April 4, 2016, had jumped an administrative bail granted him by the Commission shortly before the date. He was subsequently re-arrested on 17th March, 2017 culminating in today’s arraignment.

Defendant granted bail

Presiding Judge, Justice C.C. Ani, nevertheless graciously granted the suspect bail on health grounds to the tune of N2m with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties he ruled, must swear affidavits of means, be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and present three years tax clearance starting from 2015.

The case was adjourned to April 5, 2017 for hearing and offender mediation.

More woes for Omoni Oboli as court orders the seizure of “Okafor’s Law”

.

.

Justice Ibrahim Buba of a Federal High Court in Lagos has issued an Anton Piller order, directing the seizure of a film titled “Okafor’s Law” directed by Nollywood Producer, Omoni Oboli.

.

.

The court also issued an interim order, suspending the release and launch of the film, in any movie theatre or cinema house on March 31, pending the determination of a motion on notice before the court.

.

.

The judge ordered the seizure of all copies, materials, projections or infringing materials, relating to the subject matter. The orders followed an ex parte application filed by a company, Rancoteur Productions Ltd, on behalf of a Canada based script writer, Jude Idada.

.

.

Idada lays claim to the film “Okafor’s Law” as his intellectual property. The plaintiff had filed the suit through Anthony Idigbe, seeking an order, halting the premiere and release of the said “Okafor’s Law”, pending the determination of a copyright infringement suit filed against Oboli.

.

.

The court thereafter, fixed March 29 for hearing of the motion on notice. Idada had accused Oboli of copyright infringement on the “Okafor’s Law” movie, adding that she had stolen his story idea for the movie in September 2016.

.

.

He alleged that Oboli took the work he had done regarding “Okafor’s Law”, and developed it without giving him due credit.
