Biafra: Igbo elders disown IPOB, Niger Delta Avengers

The Supreme Council of Elders of Indigenous People Of Biafra has distanced itself from the activities of the Niger Delta Avengers and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.

The Deputy Chairman of IPOB’s Supreme Council, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, who made this disclosure at a press conference in Nnewi, Anambra State on Wednesday, said “Preachers of violence might be infants or non-existent during the 30-month Nigerian Civil War.”

The elder statesman was reacting to the claims by some IPOB and MASSOB members that the groups were aligning with the Niger Delta militants as well as other militants in the country.

The IPOB chief said there was no such a thing, adding that he witnessed the Civil War and saw how millions of people, especially from the South-East, were slaughtered and properties destroyed.

The ex-Ohanaeze President said, “The IPOB group I belong to is governed by the Supreme Council of Elders. There is a faction led by Nnamdi Kanu that abuses the elders, preaches violence and ethnic hatred.

“We do not believe in that. The MASSOB led by Ralph Uwazuruike from its inception preaches non-violence based on the philosophy of the late Indian leader, Mahatma Ghandi.

“If the militants have been blowing up pipelines, I don’t see how my group that has been following legal and diplomatic process will align with them. We have quite a different philosophy and modus operandi towards the issue of self-determination.

“The two factions of the IPOB and the two factions of MASSOB are all talking about self-determination of the indigenous people of Biafra. But their approach is not the same.

“The aim may be one but the method differs. We have not and cannot depart from dialogue, legal and diplomatic process and of course you know we are in court with the Federal Government over this issue of self-determination.”

On the prevailing economic hardship in Nigeria, Ikedife said, “It is a worthy sacrifice for the citizen to endure the hard living conditions now and enjoin a better future later.

He added, “I see the current hardship as darkness before the break of the daylight.

“We have now discovered that the economy was so badly managed before now that it requires some efforts, sacrifice and patience to get it right again.”

Breaking news! – Court orders Onyeka Onwenu to pay COSON chairman Chief Tony Okoroji N5 million and publicly apologize to him for defamation 😰😰😰

– COURT ORDERS ONYEKA ONWENU TO PUBLICLY APOLOGISE TO TONY OKOROJI AND TO PAY HIM FIVE MILLION NAIRA FOR DEFAMATION

A Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja this Thursday, June 30, 2016 ordered frontline singer and politician, Ms. Onyeka Onwenu to pay the sum of Five Million Naira as damages for defamation of character to Chief Tony Okoroji, former President of PMAN and Chairman, Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON).

Delivering judgment in Suit No: ID/935/12 filed in 2012, Hon Justice I. O. Akinkugbe (Mrs.) also ordered Ms. Onwenu to tender an unreserved public apology to Chief Okoroji to be published in Vanguard Newspapers and www.vanguardngr.com, the website of Vanguard Newspapers.

Reacting to the judgment, a jubilant Chief Tony Okoroji who was in court said, ”Once again, as has happened several times before, the courts have come to my rescue proving that despite what may be said to the contrary, you can obtain justice in Nigeria. This has taken close to four years of going in and out of court but at the end of the day, I must thank Honourable Justice Akinkugbe who the Almighty has again used to do justice for her professionalism. I must also thank my lawyer, Mr. Justin Ige for his commitment and thoroughness.

“I have committed much of my life to fighting for the welfare of every musician in Nigeria and protecting the interest of all including Ms. Onyeka Onwenu. In the battle, I have spared myself no inconvenience or discomfort and countless times, I have had to risk my life, my reputation and the welfare of my family. Working with my colleagues at COSON, we have made available to musicians across Nigeria hundreds of millions of Naira as we set out with the building of the most professional, transparent and accountable organization in the history of the creative industries in Nigeria, something that was considered impossible just a few years ago.

“I wish I never had to take Ms. Onwenu to court. I consider every Nigerian musician including Onyeka a member of my extended family. Onyeka however left me with little choice. I went to court in self defence. Till today, I do not know what wrong I did to Onyeka Onwenu. As someone I considered a close colleague and friend, I was shocked at the level of hatred she had generated within herself to justify her all-consuming campaign of lies without foundation to destroy the one thing she knows that I cherish most; my integrity.

“Every appeal to Ms Onwenu to reconsider what she was doing fell on deaf ears. Onyeka Onwenu has known me for many years. She knows very well that under no circumstance would I take a penny that does not belong to me but it suited her purpose to project me to the world as a thief. Onyeka knows that I am a stickler for rules and order but it made her happy to tell the world that I am lawless and a despot. I know that very few people will believe this: three years ago, Onyeka Onwenu went to the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Ikeja to wickedly report that I was chasing her around at night in a red Jeep in her neighborhood with the intent to assassinate her! This crazy report with absolutely no foundation was made a few days to my Birthday (December 22) and Christmas. I have little doubt that the intent was to have me suffer in jail during my Birthday, Christmas and New Year. It took the wisdom of the police authorities and the intervention of elders in the music industry such as Evangelist Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi, Prof Victor Uwaifo and Dr. Ben Ofoeze to save me from the wickedness carefully planned for me by someone I had treated with so much respect and love as my sister and friend

“My commitment to my colleagues in the music industry, the whole of the Arts and the Nigerian nation remains unshaken. From the work we are doing, I see a very bright future soon for the creative industries in Nigeria. How many times have I passed this road? I hope my experience will be a lesson to young Nigerians that if you keep your hands clean and do your job diligently, it does not matter what wickedness any man or woman may contrive against you, the good Lord will protect you. The harder they come, the harder they fall”.

Reacting to the judgment, ace broadcaster and well known friend of Chief Tony Okoroji, Mr. Patrick Doyle said “Some will recall that I publicly cautioned Onyeka Onwenu when she began her ill-advised war of attrition against Chief Tony Okoroji. I told her that she was taking on the wrong guy. She refused to listen. Now, the chickens have come home to roost and she has to pay for her attempt to destroy a good man”.

Barcelona confirm Neymar will sign new deal

The Brazil international had been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, but the La Liga champions have announced that he will extend his stay at the Camp Nou

Barcelona have confirmed that Neymar will sign a new deal at the club in the coming days.
The Brazil international had been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United this summer but now looks set to put pen to paper on a new contract at the Camp Nou.

Neymar, who moved to Spain from Santos in 2013, is expected to pledge his future to Barcelona for another five years.

Neymar wants to stay here. In the next few days we will finalise his contract extension,” club president Josep Maria Bartomeu said at a press conference.

“Neymar is not going to go from Barca, he is not going to leave. Therefore, I do not know if [it will be] tomorrow or the day afterwards but Neymar is going to continue for five seasons. It’s normal that other clubs are interested in him.

“I will make this clear – Neymar has never told us that he wants to leave. The club’s lawyers and Neymar’s lawyers will be finalising the renewal and I hope that it will be closed in the next few days.”

The 24-year-old’s release clause will rise to €230 million, which is likely to put him out of the reach of even the world’s biggest and richest clubs.

Neymar is set to take part in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August before returning to Barca for the 2016/17 campaign.

Lawyer withdraws certificate case against Buhari

A lawyer,Mr. Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe, on Thursday withdrew his suit seeking an order of a Federal High Court in Abuja to declare President Muhammadu Buhari as not qualified to contest the last year’s presidential election which was won by him (Buhari).

The plaintiff had among other prayers asked the court to direct the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the certificate of return issued to Buhari after winning the last year’s poll.
The plaintiff’s prayers were on the basis that the President did not possess the requisite Primary Six School Certificate or the West Africa School Certificate to run for the office.
But Justice Adeniyi Ademola struck out the case in a short ruling on Thursday following the plaintiff’s notice of discontinuance of the case.
The application was filed on June 27.
Defence lawyer, Mr. Paul Ajiboye, who represented Buhari and his party, the All Progressives Congress, in court on Thursday, said he had no objection to the plaintiff’s notice of discontinuance.
INEC which is the first defendant to the suit was not represented by any lawyer.
The plaintiff himself was also not present at the proceedings but he was represented by his lawyer, Mr. Chikodi Okeorji.
While moving the application for discontinuance of the suit, Okeorji, said the motion was filed in line with provision of Order 50 Rule (2)(1) of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules 2009.
He however did not disclose the reason for the discontinuance of the case.
“Following the notice of discontinuance filed by the plaintiff, pursuant to Order 50 Rule (2)(1) of the Federal High Court Civil Procedure Rules 2009, this suit is hereby struck out,” Justice Ademola ruled after listening to parties.
Meanwhile, while speaking with journalists after the proceedings, Okeorji said he could not tell his plaintiff’s reasons for deciding to withdraw to the suit.
“That question is best answered by the plaintiff himself. But there must an end to litigation,” the plaintiff’s lawyer said.

Breaking : Ex-minister Ojo Maduekwe dies at 71

A former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, is dead. He died in Abuja on Wednesday evening.

The cause of his death was however unknown, but the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Walid Jibril, confirmed his death.

Until his death, Maduekwe was the secretary of the PDP BoT.

He was said to have died at his Ministers’ Estate residence, Abuja.

Sources close to him said he had a health challenge on his way back to Nigeria from the United States of America.

Jibril, in an emotion-laden voice, told our correspondent that the death of his secretary came to him as a rude shock.

He said he got the news from Saudi Arabia, where he is currently observing the Lesser Hajj.

Jibril, who alongside Maduekwe and other members of the Board of the PDP took over the running of the party following the crisis that engulfed the PDP after its national convention in Port Harcourt on May 21, said the party had lost a loyal member.

He said, “He was a worthy man; a very dedicated member of the party, who operated with an open mind. He was a very resourceful man, a dependable ally who tried his best for the country, his party, his family and everyone around him.

“It is a great loss to the nation, the PDP and his family. He was a national secretary of our party, a former ambassador. In fact, I have lost a friend and a loyal party man.

“He was one of the best secretaries of the party and a great manager of men. It will be very difficult to have someone like him. “

Also, a former Minister of Transportation, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, said he received the news of Maduekwe’s death with shock.

He said it was difficult for him to believe that his colleague in the BoT had died, saying that “he was a nice man. He was very intellectual in all his ways.

“He was a plain person, he had no animosity towards anyone. We spoke about three weeks ago and I never knew that we were speaking for the last time. “

While serving as the minister of transportation, Maduekwe popularised the use of bicycle as a means of transportation. This made people to refer to him as “Ojo oni keke,” which means Ojo, the bicycle man.

Born on May  6, 1945 in Abia State, the deceased was appointed Foreign Affairs Minister on July 26, 2007 by the late President   Umaru Yar’Adua

He left office in March 2010 when the then Acting President Goodluck Jonathan  dissolved his cabinet.

Government kicks as hoodlums vandalise 14 BRT buses in Lagos

No fewer than 14 buses belonging to Primero Transport Service Ltd were on Wednesday vandalised by suspected hoodlums along the Ikorodu Road in Lagos.

Trouble started after a street hawker, who was evading arrest by Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) officials was knocked down by an articulated vehicle at Maryland Bus Stop.

No sooner than the incident occurred, the suspected hoodlums pounced on the mass transit vehicles to vent their anger over the death of the street hawker.

Mr Adedeji Adeosun, a driver with the company, whose vehicle was vandalised said: “I was in traffic for about 20 minutes at Maryland.

“Then I saw some people running from Maryland and I opened the door to see what was happening.

“I heard shouts from people that we should come down, so, I immediately removed my uniform.

“I saw about 100 of the hoodlums otherwise called `area boys’ coming with stones and so I ran away.

“All the passengers on board my bus also came down and ran for dear life. I was hit by a big stone’’.

Another driver, Mr Michael Onabolu, said: “I saw people running and shouting that I should come down from the bus.

“And all of a sudden, I saw some guys surrounding the buses and asking my passengers and I to come down.

“Before I knew it, one of them hit the bus with a big stone and I could not move because of the traffic. I was wounded on my hands and my tights with stones’’.

He said that a passenger sitting beside him was also hit by a stone, adding that all the passengers were moved to other buses to reach their destinations.

A commuter, Mr Elijah Omotayo, who was attacked in the process, said that the mob told the driver to open the door which the passengers asked him not to do.

Omotayo, a student, told NAN that “they started throwing the stones and one of the stones hit my head’’.

Mr Fola Tinubu, the Managing Director, Primero Ltd, expressed displeasure over the vandalism.

“We don’t know what happened, whatever it is; it is something that has to do with the government or the police.

“But does that give aggrieved people the right to destroy private property.

“People are saying that there are no jobs in Nigeria; we have created over 2,000 jobs in the last six months. Is this the reward we will get for it?

“We need to start asking ourselves serious questions in this country,’’ he told NAN.

“They have destroyed over 14 of our buses now. I don’t even know how many they have destroyed now. For what, what did we do; I am angry.

“I don’t even know where to begin because there is no justification for destroying private property; our service is for the masses.

“Do you know how many people will be stranded today if we don’t go out to pick them up?

“How are they going to get home? We do this for the masses. Is this the reward that we will get? This is madness.’’

Meanwhile, the police with the help of the bus drivers have arrested three suspects and taken them to the company’s head office at Majidun in Ikorodu town.

However, the Lagos State Government later on Wednesday said that the street hawker knocked down at Maryland Bus Stop in Lagos earlier in the day was not hit by a BRT bus.

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde in a statement said the street hawker was hit by a truck belonging to a soft drink company.

The statement was issued against the backdrop of the destruction of several BRT buses in the area after the incident, following which the buses went off the roads temporarily.

A street hawker who was trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), attempted to cross the road before being hit by the truck, which was erroneously thought to be a BRT bus.

“As a result, hoodlums, armed with sticks and stones, immediately descended on some BRT buses plying the route as at the time of the incident and in the process destroyed several of the BRT buses.

“It wasn’t any of our buses that killed him (hawker), it was a soft drink company truck that unfortunately crushed the boy while he was trying to escape from KAI officers who were on patrol trying to rid the street of street hawkers and traders.

“But hoodlums now took advantage of that to start destroying government assets, including several of the brand new BRT buses,” he said.

Ayorinde said it took the intervention of a team from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) to quell the riotous scene caused by the hoodlums before the corpse of the boy was taken to the morgue at the General Hospital, Ikeja.

The Commissioner said that no fewer than three hoodlums alleged to have been part of the mob that destroyed the BRT buses had been arrested, and the law would take its full course.

“The Lagos State Government will like to use this opportunity to further reiterate that it will not relent in ridding the state of illegality, street trading and hawking,” he said.

Ayorinde said that Section 1 of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003, restricted street trading and hawking in the metropolis.

He also said that Sections 7 and 8 of the same law gave jurisdiction and power to the Special Court to order the seizure and public auction of items impounded from street traders.

Section 10 of the law, he said, also prescribed a N5000 fine or three months imprisonment upon conviction.

“Street traders are hereby urged to desist from this illegal activity because the government will not be blackmailed and would do that which is necessary.

“For the miscreants and hoodlums, the Lagos State Government and the Police Command will not allow any act of civil disobedience.

“Those arrested will be dealt with in accordance with the law and further arrests will be made as investigation continues,” he said. (NAN)

Alleged forgery: Resign, SGF tells Saraki, Ekweremadu

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, David Babachir Lawal, has thrown himself into the fray in respect of alleged forgery trial of Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, asking the principal officers of the Senate to resign their positions.

The Senate, in a swift reaction last night, said the two principal officers of the Senate will not resign, insisting that it was being assaulted by the executive arm of government in the ongoing trial of its leaders.

But Lawal said, yesterday, that the Senate was not on trial for forgery, but that only the actors in the alleged act, the Senate President, his deputy and two others being prosecuted.

He also said the honourable thing for the duo to do was to resign as former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Salisu Buhari, who was accused of certificate forgery, did.

The SGF was reacting to the allegation by Saraki that a “cabal” had hijacked the government of President Muhammadu Buhari as well as Ekweremadu’s statement that Buhari was exhibiting dictatorial tendencies.

In a statement he personally signed, Lawal said the positions of the Senate leaders were contradictory. He also described their statements as unfortunate, stating that the Federal Government was not deciding the trial of the duo.

Saraki and Ekweremadu are being tried before an FCT High Court for allegedly forging the Senate Standing Rules 2015. The other accused persons are former Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Salisu Maikasuwa, and his former deputy, Bernard Efeturi.

Lawal stated that a case of forgery was usually preferred against individuals, recalling that such case of certificate forgery led to the resignation of one-time Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Salisu Buhari. He said bringing the National Assembly as a body into the court case was unwarranted.

Brexit: Obama warns on global growth after UK vote to leave

US President Barack Obama has said the UK vote to leave the EU raises “longer-term concerns about global growth”.

He said Brexit would freeze “the possibilities of investment in Great Britain or in Europe as a whole”.

He appealed to the UK prime minister and other EU leaders to ensure an orderly process for the British exit.

Earlier EU leaders warned that the UK must honour the principle of free movement of people if it wants to retain access to the single market.

The leaders of the other 27 EU countries were meeting in Brussels without the UK for the first time in more than 40 years.

Mr Obama was speaking at a summit in Ottawa with the leaders of Canada and Mexico, aimed at strengthening economic ties between North American countries.

He said the preparations by central banks and finance ministers indicated that “global economy in the short run will hold steady”.

But he added: “I think there are some genuine longer-term concerns about global growth if in fact Brexit goes through and that freezes the possibilities of investment in Great Britain or in Europe as a whole.

“At a time when global growth rates were weak already, this doesn’t help,” the president said.
Catching breath

Mr Obama also strongly defended free trade and promised to press on with plans for a Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Without mentioning Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump – who opposes the plan – he said: “We’ve had times throughout our history where anti-immigration sentiment is exploited by demagogues. But guess what? They kept coming.”

Mr Obama said his main message to Britain and Germany was: “Everybody should catch their breath. I think that will be a difficult, challenging process, but it does not need to be a panicky process,”

The president said he had spoken to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and that her interest was making sure Britain’s exit worked, not retribution.

Mrs Merkel was one of many EU leaders to stress again on Wednesday that freedom of movement for EU citizens was an essential part of the single market – and that there would be no negotiations with the UK until the bloc was formally notified of its intention to leave.

After their meeting, the 27 EU leaders said in a statement: “Access to the single market requires acceptance of all four freedoms.”

The “four freedoms” that underlie the EU’s internal market are the freedom of movement of goods, workers, services and capital.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will have separate phone talks with British Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel later on Thursday, Japan’s foreign ministry said.

Mr Cameron announced he would resign after the campaign he led for his country to remain in the EU was defeated by 52% to 48% in Thursday’s referendum.

The outgoing leader said that he would attempt to “steady the ship”, but that it would be for the new prime minister to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which would give the UK two years to negotiate its withdrawal.

He told parliament in London that the issue of freedom of movement would be difficult to resolve.

“Frankly, it’s a difficult issue inside the EU, where you’ve got all the negotiating ability to try and change things, and I think it will be in many ways even more difficult from outside,” he said.

My Wife is The Best Cook – Tony One Week

Musician cum comedian turned politician, Tony One Week, rarely makes headlines but bumping into him recently shows how much he loves his family especially his wife whom he does not joke with.

Tony recently appreciated his wife during their anniversary for standing by him since 1999 noting that she was there for him when he had nothing to the extent that everyone deserted him.

The singer describes his wife as “a Godly woman, beautiful woman and a great cook.” Tony seems to have been missing in the Nigerian entertainment radar but as the saying goes, ‘that man shall not live by bread alone’ and as such, he has chosen to spread his tentacles wide as he has been busy with other businesses.

Pogba better off at Real Madrid than Barcelona, claims Camoranesi

The former Juventus star claims Madrid’s policy of buying individual stars would be better suited for the France international were he to leave Italian giants Juventus

Paul Pogba would be a better fit for Real Madrid ahead of Barcelona, according to former Juventus star Mauro Camoranesi.

The France international has been linked with both Spanish clubs, although the midfielder’s agent Mino Raiola claimed earlier this month that talks have begun over a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

And Camoranesi, who made over 280 appearances during his time at Juve, believes Madrid would be the best destination for the 23-year-old

“I see him more a player for Real Madrid because Madrid buys individualities and then adapts them to a way to play.

“Real Madrid use to buy resolute players, players who can win games on their own.

“Barcelona already have a structure and they look for players to insert in that system, not individuals, that’s what’s different.”

Drunken cop dies after disagreement with girlfriend

the corpse of a policeman, Sergeant Godspower Okoro, has been deposited at the Mainland General Hospital, Lagos State, for an autopsy to unravel the cause of his death.

Correspondent learnt that Okoro, who was attached to the Alausa Police Division, was found dead in his rented apartment on Baale Street, Ojodu Berger, around 8am on Sunday.

It was gathered that the policeman had returned from duty around 7pm on Friday, reportedly drunk and did not go out until he was discovered dead two days later by his girlfriend.

The girlfriend, who had allegedly complained about his bad drinking habit, reportedly planned to take him to a church that morning.

Most residents were afraid to speak about the incident when our correspondent visited the residence on Tuesday.

However, the landlord’s wife, who identified herself simply as Iya Nimota, said she last saw Okoro around 7pm on Friday when he returned from work.

The woman, who spoke in Yoruba, said except for being drunk most times, the deceased was jovial and peaceful.

She added that Okoro and his girlfriend, whose name had yet to be ascertained, had a misunderstanding on Friday after he was allegedly drunk.

She said, “I don’t know what caused his death but  I know he drank a lot. When he returned from work that Friday, he was drunk. I saw him when he arrived.

“He was supposed to go for a morning duty on Saturday but I learnt he called his superior that he was weak and would not be able to go. It was his girlfriend who came on Sunday that found him dead. She raised the alarm and called for help.

“She said she had a disagreement with him on Friday when they met in Alausa because he was tipsy. She said she wanted to take him to a church for prayers on Sunday when she saw his corpse.

“My husband went to report at the Ojodu Police Station and some policemen came to remove his corpse. Nobody was arrested. He was friendly. Heavy drinking was his major problem.”

Another resident, who did not want his name in print, said the policeman had been cautioned several times to reduce his drinking to no avail.

“He was drunk on that Friday. He fell on the street when he was about to reach home and some people lifted him up. They wanted to take him home, but he refused.

“When he initially moved in here four years ago, he was not drinking. His friends cautioned him to reduce his drinking habit. If he had a wife, probably he would have changed,” he added.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed Okoro’s death, adding that a postmortem would be carried out on his body to ascertain the cause of his death.

She said, “At about 10am on Sunday, Sergeant Godspower Okoro attached to the Alausa division was found dead in his room on Baale Street. Detectives from the Ojodu divison visited, examined and photographed the scene. No mark of violence was found on the body.

“The corpse was removed and deposited at the Mainland General Hospital for autopsy.”

Lionel Messi statue unveiled in Buenos Aires as Argentina president says he hopes to tempt star to reverse shock decision

The president of Argentina said on Tuesday he hopes to meet Lionel Messi next week and convince him to return to the national team.

President Mauricio Macri said he had spoken by telephone with Messi after he announced his shock retirement from the Argentine national team following the dramatic penalty shoot-out defeat by Chile in the Copa America final last Sunday.

Messi returned to Argentina on Monday, but has not spoken publicly about his decision.

Macri said he told Messi to ‘ignore some of the nonsense because, truth be told, we are all very happy’ with how the Barcelona star has played for Argentina.

Football fans in Argentina are struggling to come to terms with Messi's decision to end his career in the famous blue and white stripes of his country     Football fans in Argentina are struggling to come to terms with Messi's decision to end his career in the famous blue and white stripes of his country

Messi, who moved to Barcelona aged 13, has often faced tough criticism in Argentina because he has failed to deliver the country a major title. The lack of success with La Albiceleste is in direct contrast to his huge trophy haul with the Catalan giants at club level.

Messi is often compared unfavourably to Maradona, who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title, but Macri said he didn’t understand the criticism of a player widely accepted as the world’s best.

‘The truth is that it’s good fortune, a joy, a gift from God to have the best player in the world in a country like ours that is so football crazy,’ said Macri, a former president of Boca Juniors.

Macri’s lobbying could be helped by a gathering planned for Saturday at the obelisk in central Buenos Aires, the city’s most famous landmark.

Support for Messi has been overwhelming on social media with sports figures, artists and politicians urging him to return.

Billboards and signs across the city are also asking him to stay. In the midst of the turmoil, the Buenos Aires city hall unveiled a statue of Messi – with a football at his foot – alongside other national sports stars.

Adamawa State Based Musician goes missing after releasing anti-corruption song

A popular musician in the North East has gone missing just days after releasing a scathing song accusing local lawmakers of corruption, police and family said Wednesday.

Ado Dahiru Daukaka went missing in the Adamawa State capital, Yola, after he left his house early on Friday to offer dawn prayers at a mosque.

His new song accuses politicians from President Muhammadu Buhari’s ruling party of corruption and predicts they will not be voted in the 2019 election.

The song “Gyara Kayanka”, or ‘Put your house in order’ in the local Hausa language, accuses local lawmakers of being selfish and corrupt.

The family of the singer said he was a political target.

“It is obvious his disappearance is an abduction by some interests who are infuriated by his latest song which exposed corruption among legislators at the state house of assembly,” Daukaka’s relative Atiku Mustapha told AFP.

“We believe they abducted him as a warning to other critics like him. They just want to muzzle critics,” Mustapha said.

Hadiza Adamu, one of the singer’s two wives, said he had no enemies.

“My husband is not known to be at loggerheads with any one. The only explanation we could provide is that he could have angered some powerful interests with his songs,” said Adamu, who gave birth just five days before he went missing.

“We call on whoever is behind his disappearance to have pity on us and release him unharmed,” she said.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Adamawa State Command, Othman Abubakar, said an investigation has been launched but declined to comment if the disappearance was linked to the song.

Fierce critics

Daukaka became popular following Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999 with a hit in praise of then-state governor Murtala Nyako.

Local singers are fierce critics in northern Nigeria with their songs that tackle everything from forbidden love to political discontent.

One of the country’s most popular singers, Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, was imprisoned by Buhari during his short-lived reign as military ruler in the 80’s.

Kuti’s arrest on charges of currency smuggling were dismissed by human rights groups who argued he was a political detainee after criticising the government.

Court Sentences Bricklayer To Death By Hanging For Armed Robbery

A ‎bricklayer, Femi Adebowale was on Tuesday sentenced to death by hanging for conspiracy and armed robbery.

Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of a Lagos High court, sitting in Ikeja found the convict guilty of a four count charge offence preferred against him by the Lagos state government.

She said the minimum penalty provided by the law is death sentence for each of the four account offence for which the convict was charged.

“‎In accordance with the provision of the law, you are hereby sentenced to death by hanging by the neck until death. May the Lord have mercy on us”, she said.

The Prosecution, Mr. Akin George had accused Adebowale of robbing one Alhaja Amudalat Olowo-Eyo of gold jewelries‎ valued over N500,000.00; cash of N350,000.00 and other valuable documents at gun point.

The prosecutor said the convict, with others at large, robbed their victims on December 28, 2012 between 1.00 a.m. and 2.00 am at their residence, 10, Aiyetolu street, Abule Egba, Lagos.

The convict, when arraigned last year, had pleaded not guilty to the four count charge.

During trial, the complainant, Alhaja Olowo-Eyo had told the court how the convict and others at large robbed her‎ at her residence.

She had told the court that she and her family were gathered in their parlour and ‎told that they would waste their lives if they refused to cooperate with them.

She said she identified the convict as being among bricklayers brought in by her landlord for the renovation of the house two days before the incident.

She said that after robbing then, her husband was able to pin one of the robbers down, a situation that gave her courage to also held to another robber next to her.

In order to free himself, she said the robber shot her twice in the chest but that God kept her alive. She said colleagues of the convict who escaped came back 20 minutes later and rained bullets on their apartment.

She said one of her daughters was hit in the stomach, another on the back while her son was hit on the thigh. She said the incidence was reported at Ile Epo Police station while they were treated at the General Hospital in the area.

Delivering judgement in the matter, Justice Ipaye dismissed the alibi provided by the convict that he was away in Akure for his marriage introduction ceremony on the day of the incident.

She also‎ described as not credible, the evidence provided by the supposed father in-law who told the court during trial he met the convict for the first time on the day of the ceremony.

We must take care of Messi – Argentina president

The 29-year-old announced his decision to quit international football following the Copa America final defeat to Chile and the country’s leader wants him to ignore his critics

Argentina president Mauricio Macri revealed his discussion with Lionel Messi as he tried to convince the star to remain with the national team.

The 29-year-old stunningly announced he was set to retire from internationals after his side’s penalty shoot-out loss to Chile in the Copa America Centenario final on Sunday.

Fans and players have urged Messi, Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer, to reconsider.

Marci has tried to do the same and said the Barcelona star was huge for the country.

“I spoke with him to congratulate him and tell him he had done a great championship,” Macri told reporters.

He added: “I don’t understand. The truth is that it’s a joy, a gift from God, to have the best player in the world in a country like ours.

Messi is the biggest thing we have in Argentina, so you have to take care of him.”

Macri spoke to Messi on Monday, a day after Gerardo Martino’s men went down to Chile 4-2 on penalties.

He also wanted the miraculous attacker to ignore critics, saying: “I told him not to pay attention to all the comments being made because, in truth, we are very happy.”

Messi scored five goals at the Copa, but he put his penalty in the shoot-out over the bar as Argentina’s 23-year trophy drought continued.

He is yet to speak publicly since announcing his decision.

Yemi Alade rates Beyonce and Her Equal

Sexy singer, Yemi Alade got tongues waggling over the weekend, when she stepped out with a designer dress worth 2.5 million naira.

As if that was not enough, the singer who is still making buzz in the media has given more to talk about her.

She now ranks herself equal with international acts like Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, among others.

Well, it’s good to appreciate one’s craft, and no doubt Nigerian music has gone far more than the shores of our country alone.

Isn’t such comparison a bit unrealistic? As the singer claims the only differences she can spot is ‘opportunity’ which put these international acts on an advantage.

In her words: “I was fortunate to watch Beyonce, Alicia keys, usher, Jennifer Hudson hit the stage, all in one night. It was magical. I also realized that apart from the talent, the major difference between us and them is opportunity.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan wants ‘full seat’ at Brexit talks

London Mayor Sadiq Khan rejected calls for London to secede from the rest of Britain after a national referendum in favour of leaving the EU but said he wanted a “full seat” at any Brexit negotiations.
Khan also demanded more autonomy from central government, including on public spending, in order to “protect” the British capital’s economy.

While the campaign to leave the European Union won Thursday’s referendum nationwide with 52 percent, Londoners voted 60 percent in favour of Britain staying in the EU along with Scotland, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar.

London should have “a full seat at the negotiating table”, Khan said at a business conference, according to a copy of his speech posted on the mayor’s website.

“Remaining in the single market needs to be priority one, two and three of our negotiation with the EU.

“As much as I might like the idea of a London city state, I’m not seriously talking about independence today. I am not planning to install border points on the M25,” Khan told the conference in London.

“But on behalf of all Londoners, I am demanding more autonomy for the capital — right now,” he said, adding: “We can’t hang around for the outcome of the negotiations before we give Londoners more control”.

Following the shock referendum result, an online petition urging Khan to declare independence and apply for London to join the European Union independently received 175,000 signatures.

“Londoners — who voted for a different path than the rest of England — need more self-determination. We need to control our own destiny,” Khan said.

Gunmen kill Lagos police sergeant, rob boat passengers

A police sergeant, Yusuf Hadi, has been ambushed and shot dead by suspected militants while in a boat on Ishuti River in the Egan area of Igando, Lagos State.

Our correspondent learnt that the gunmen, who were in another boat, attacked Hadi, who was attached to the Police Mobile Force 43, two female passengers, and the boat operator around the Agbara Bridge, towards Totowu community in Ogun State.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident occurred at about 3pm on Monday, and was reported at the Igando Police Division.

Some policemen at the Igando division were said to have rushed the sergeant to a private hospital but he did not survive the attack.

It was learnt that the militants, believed to be pipeline vandals, also dispossessed the ladies of their phones and money, before ordering Hadi to lie flat in the boat.

The sergeant, who was in uniform as of the time of the attack, was said to have begged his assailants to spare his life.

However, the vandals said he was an enemy and fired him first in the leg.

Thereafter, they reportedly pumped bullets into his body.

It was gathered that the boat operator and female passengers ferried Hadi to Ishuti, Egan, where some policemen from the Igando division rushed him to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

When reporter got to the Ishuti River on Tuesday, a witness, who gave his name only as Otunba, said the militants were three.

He said, “The three gunmen came in a fibre boat around 3pm. They waylaid the policeman’s boat around the Agbara Bridge area. They ordered the policeman to enter their boat and he did. He begged them to spare his life. But they said he was an enemy and ordered him to lie down in the boat. They first shot at his leg.

“Then they robbed the female passengers and the boat operator, collecting money, phones and jewellery. They returned to the policeman and they rained bullets on him. The militants instructed the boat operator not to drive away until the sergeant was dead.

“It was around 3.30pm that the boat got to Egan. Policemen from Igando division were here to receive the sergeant. His commander also came to check him, but he had died. If there had been a helicopter patrol around the bridge, the militants could have been spotted and arrested.”

The chairman of the boat operators, Ishuti River Unit, Alhaji Nurudeen Olorunfemi, urged the government to have military surveillance around the Agbara Bridge, which he said was notorious for militants’ attacks.

He said, “The Ishuti River, flows to Totowu, Itele and Agbara areas of Ogun State. The boat operator who was attacked is one of our members. He told us that the gunmen felt intimidated by the presence of the policeman.

“The ladies came back without their money and phones. Policemen from Igando were here on Monday and Tuesday to assess the area. Although the place of robbery fell under Ogun State, here was the nearest hospital the sergeant could have been rushed to. He, however, did not make it.

“It could happen to anyone. I urge the government to station military officers around the Agbara Bridge. That area is notorious for militants’ attacks. From the Agbara Bridge, you can connect the Lagos Lagoon. If the government ensures security on the waterways, this will not happen again.

“On our own part, we take safety measures. We allow only registered boat operators. Any strange face that brings a boat here is reported to the police. We also use lifejackets and adhere to the regulations given by the state government.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the killing.

She added that the command was working with the Ogun State Police Command to get to the root of the incident.

She said, “Hadi, with Force Number 397842, was shot dead by hoodlums in a boat on the Totowu Waterway in Ogun State, while on transit to Lagos.

“The shooting was done in a yet-to-be-determined circumstance. The corpse has been deposited in a morgue for an autopsy.

“Although the incident occurred under the Ogun State jurisdiction, the command will partner the Ogun command to get to the root of the matter.”

Farewell game for Amodu and Keshi scheduled for July 23

The Lagos State Government in conjunction with the Sports Writer’s Association of Nigeria (Lagos Chapter) and the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, have set up a committee to oversee the Lagos farewell testimonial match for late ex-Super Eagles coaches Amodu Shaibu and Stephen Keshi. The match has been scheduled for the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos on July 23.

The chairman of the committee who is also the President-General of the NFSC, Rafiu Ladipo, said the event is meant to raise money for the families of the departed coaches and also celebrate them.

He said, “The match would have Eagles players battle against a Lagos All Stars team in the main match of the day, while the curtain-raiser would be a game between the Lagos SWAN team and the supporters club. This would be followed by a musical concert where prominent Nigerian musicians and comedians would perform in the entertainment aspect of the programme. This aspect of the event will be coordinated by veteran musician, Chris Mba.”

The coordinator of the event, Effiong Nyong, said, “Amodu and Keshi must be celebrated with fanfare as they left their footprints on the sands of time. It is sad that we won’t see the two coaches that qualified Nigeria for three editions of the World Cup out of the five the country competed in, again.”

Istanbul Ataturk airport attack: 36 dead , 147 injured

A gun and bomb attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk international airport has killed 36 people and 147 injured, officials say.
Three attackers opened fire near an entry point to the terminal and blew themselves up after police fired at them, officials say.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said early signs suggested the so-called Islamic State was behind the attack.

Recent bombings have been linked to either IS or Kurdish separatists.

Tuesday’s attack looked like a major co-ordinated assault, says the BBC’s Mark Lowen.

Ataturk airport was long seen as a vulnerable target, our Turkey correspondent adds, reporting from a plane stuck on the tarmac in Istanbul.

There are X-ray scanners at the entrance to the terminal but security checks for cars are limited.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the attack should serve as a turning point in the global fight against militant groups.

“The bombs that exploded in Istanbul today could have gone off at any airport in any city around the world,” he said.

The US called the attack “heinous”, and said saying America remained “steadfast in our support for Turkey”.

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: “We grieve for the victims. We stand by Turkey”.

Speaking several hours after Tuesday’s attack, Mr Yildirim said at least 36 people were killed and many wounded, some seriously.

He also said foreigners were likely to be among the dead.

Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag put the number of injured at 147.

Footage has emerged on social media that appears to show a police officer shooting one of the attackers, who detonates a suicide belt as he is lying injured on the ground.

Flights in and out of the airport were suspended after the attack.

The US Federal Aviation Administration grounded all flights between the US and Istanbul.

Taxis were used to rush casualties to hospital after the attack.

Eyewitness Paul Roos told the Associated Press news agency that he was due to fly home to South Africa when the attackers struck.

“We came up from the arrivals to the departures, up the escalator when we heard these shots going off,” he said.

“There was this guy going roaming around, he was dressed in black and he had a handgun.”

Charles Michel, the Prime Minister of Belgium whose capital city was targeted by bombers in March, tweeted from the EU summit in Brussels: “Our thoughts are with the victims of the attacks at Istanbul’s airport. We condemn these atrocious acts of violence.”

In December, a blast on the tarmac at a different Istanbul airport, Sabiha Gokcen, killed a cleaner. That attack was claimed by a Kurdish group, the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK).
